What happens if... ?

(Oldest Posts First)

Cratloe make the All Ireland finals of both codes.

Not likely but not beyond the bounds of possibility now. In to the hurling final and with inexperienced champions from Cork and Kerry in the football and the decent track record of Clare clubs they can't be ruled out of that.

So, what happens on St. Patricks Day if their incredible dual run continues?

It'd the greatest achievement ever by any club side is what it would be.
Very unlikely as you say but I'm sure the powers that be would be aware of it seeing as Ballyboden and kilmacud crimes have excelled in both codes in Leinster in recent times but it wouldn't surprise me if they made both finals and were forced to play one after the other.

It'd be a unique situation but they'd have to play both finals on the same day regardless. Everyone knew at the start of both competitions when the finals were set. Based on the fright they gave Dr. Crokes last year and the fact I saw a Clare club win the Munster football championship not too long ago. They've a strong possibility of a Munster double anyway.

Did Finbarr's from Cork not do the club double before around the start of the 80's?

As bad as the GAA are there is no way they would be forced to play both finals on the same day as it would inevitably lead to a boycott by Cratloe of both finals if they were asked to do so.

Besidetheditch, Finbarrs won the double before the finals were held on the same day or in same venue. I was at the 1976 final won by Vinnies against Roscommon Gaels. I think that was in Tullamore?

If a team was good enough to achieve two finals the least the GAA could do for them is play each final on seperate days. I know the old traditionalist heads will be spinning at the thought of change but the sacrifice several dual players would have to make for their club to reach two finals should be rewarded.

The Barrs won the football in 1980, 1981 and 1987. The hurling in 1975 and 1978. They never had the dilemma that could possibly, although highly unlikely, face Cratloe

St Finbarrs got to both finals in 81 Andy but they lost the hurling. I'd imagine if Cratloe do stay progressing then the GAA may look to swap one of their finals with an intermediate final. I expect that the demands will catch up with the players soon and they will depart one of the competitions, their achievements so far are incredible though.

extract from today's Independent:

Meanwhile, out of the victorious football championship-winning team, 11 starters played in the hurling final just a week before. David Ryan, Shane O'Leary and David Collins came off the bench in the football final, meaning that they had 14 dual senior medalists playing successive finals within seven days.

Some achievement for them. I can see The Nire turning them over in the football this weekend
