Listening to Liam McHale on Off the Ball now. Said that the county board thought their presentation was too radical. Said the county board was happy to go with a similar coaching setup than that which lost the All Irelands of 2012 and 2013 and got us to this years semis. He wouldn't elaborate in what those plans were. Here was me thinking McStay was a bit old-fashioned and self-righteous, seems that way sometimes on the Sunday Game. I won't judge the book by the cover too soon next time. McHale always comes across as progressive but, from his basketball years, might be a bit too progressive and,dare-I-say-it, fuller of American sounding positivity for some of the dinosaurs on our county board. But fair play for both of them to realise that something new has to be tried. That's exactly what the Mayo senior team need, rather than repeating the mistakes of the past. And not picking a management team that won't rock the boat or because the players are happier with them because they brought them to an U21 All Ireland.

Hopefully Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes will come up with something different of their own because if Mayo are ever going to win an All Ireland things need to change.

Yeah, heard that and just heard the end of another issue they were discussing which seemed to suggest the county board clowns are still running the circus.
The new management team must be looking forward to dealing with them.

this smells big time.they must be some crowd when they cant cover up a cover up!! most gaa people would love mayo to win an all ireland if their own county wasnt in it but this type of thing isnt good.it seems the mayo county board look to be happy to have the team"up there" rather than go the whole way..

It's hard to know what motivates members of the Mayo County Board alright. Doesn't look like doing their best for football in the county is top of their list. Befire O'Mahony returned I thought that he was a good choice and would revive our fortunes. That didn't orive to be the case, his politucal ambitions were greater than his footballing ones and the county board left him there far too long.

Sounds very messy over there right now lads, big shame after dining at the top table for the last few years. Will there be fallout or will it be sorted sensibly?

Id imagine the new management team will bring something totally new and maybe unearth a new player or two which could be all Mayo need. Maybe some sour grapes from McHale?

Lots of talk from all parties now, it reflects badly on all concerned in Mayo, i wonder would the Mc Stay /Mc Hale ticket be interested in another county now.. Galway position still not filled

I think people should delay making judgements about the county board until we get a better idea of what these radical changes that were in the presentation included. If it involved a huge outlay of money or a change to how the club championship is run then I would applaud the county board for rejecting it. Mayo are regular All-Ireland finalists, they won a minor last year and had a team in this year's club All-Ireland, this suggests the county board are getting alot of things right.

It might not just have been the radical proposals, whatever they were, were the deciding factor in not appointing McStay and McHale. Spending a pile more money on an already substantial amount on the senior squad wouldn't be ideal alright Soma. McHale said that they would look at changing the style of football and the way they approach the games. Approach to the games might include re-arranging the club championships, who knows. It'll come out eventually.

All well and good reaching 7 All Ireland Finals and winning a league, a minor championship and U21 championship within that time.

When we lost the '96 replay the County Board, management, players etc should have realised 'We're good enough to get to a Final, why are we not good enough to win one' and come up with a plan and implemented it to get to the ultimate goal. Since 1989, Donegal, Derry, Armagh and Tyrone each won the first All Irelands and Donegal won their second and Tyrone have won three. Fair play to them. It wasn't by fluke but by careful planning, some radical thinking and a serious amount of hard work from players, management, county board and no little skill.

Obviously the Mayo County Board have done some good but as recently as James Horan's resignation he was critical of them. They're not going to appoint McStay and McHale this time, but they should at least be open to Connelly and Holmes adapting some of their 'radical' proposals. Otherwise we'll be doing groundhog day for Mayo football for some time to come.
