The B Team

(Oldest Posts First)

Should Kerry be allowed to enter a B team into Championship & League. Have the best footballers in the country and Kerry Group pumping in €1 million per year would be well to compete in Munster Championship and Division 2/3 in League

This team is well capable of making the business end of championship

What nonsense of a thread........

It's like suggesting Kilkenny should enter 3 teams into the hurling

But that is just half of their first team squad, not their B team. If they or any county were to do that then let them pick 35 players for their first squad, and then let the rest play on the B team. I don't think it would be Kerry that would have the strongest B squad, considering some counties already have senior 'development squads', or B teams, in place...

No. Championship is for the best players to represent their county. Maybe second-string sides could field for a competition like the All-Ireland 'B' Championship, or the defunct Tommy Murphy Cup, but even then, the weaker counties would rightly complain that it's against the spirit of such a competition to have Kerry fielding the Gooch against them.

there already is a junior championship.
I believe this is the kerry team that played Cavan in the 2014 final.
this would be made up of all those players who hadn't played senior championship football this year. (open to correction here)

1. Shane Murphy - Kilcummin
2. Fionán Clifford - Waterville
3. Kevin O'Dwyer - Waterville
4. Danny Wrenn - Tarbert
5. Greg Gibson - Waterville
6. Denis Daly - St. Marys
7. Gavin Crowley - Templenoe
8. Andrew Garnett - Spa
9. Brendan O'Sullivan - Valentia
10. Philip O'Connor - Cordal
11. Ciaran Keating - Skellig Rangers
12. Brian Crowley - Templenoe
13. Gavan O'Grady - Glenbeigh/Glencar
14. Paul Kennelly - Ballydonoghue
15. Thomas Hickey (Capt) - Castleisland Desmonds

In last year's semi-final we had only the starting XV to call upon. After the well spoken losses over the winter and then Gooch's injury, it's been some turnaround to be down 4 players from that 15 and yet have a squad of 22-23 players who could have been called upon as we saw in extra-time in Limerick this year.

You could throw Daniel Bohane,Brian Maguire,David Geaney,Michael O'Donogue,Niall O'Mahony,Brian Looney and Barry Shanahan onto that Kerry Region list.

Barry John Walsh was a promising minor but never developed after that.

Barry John Walsh was the best minor player since the Gooch, went travelling and football was no 2 on his list, no shame on that still plays club football. We also has a lad called Dan Doona who was a class act, went to New York at 19 and that was that.
Kerry have had a history of minors who were top of the class and drifted away at Senior.

Paddy Curin is another body that would maeke any Division 2 team. Throw in Jack O'Connor sons. The Kerry Region is booming. Where did Jack O'Shea son Aidan go to? A handy full back.

Aidan O shea was always very injury prone and never really got a decent run of games at interco. Re Barry John Walsh IMO he was lucky to be on the panel in '09 oweing partly to Jack O Connors connections with his club and has never really done the business at club level since.
Think if a Tommy Murphy cup style comp was introduced with a Kerry/Dub etc B teams it would be a great idea - scrap the Junior interco champo and I'm sure it would drive huge interest to have a Kerr/Dublin team competing in a 2nd competition.

West Kerry's performance at the weekend wasn't of a team about to arrive on the inter county scene!
Poor Limerick would have won a Connaught title or two in the last decade.
The Ulster Region unite as one. The Connaught Region appears to unite as one. Bodes well for their respective Inter provincial campaigns.
It's funny how our Munster final rivals are dismissed. I've no interest in commenting on them. They are however a tougher opponent than the Leinster and Connaught runners-up.
