"True" dual clubs

(Oldest Posts First)

We've the spectre of Portlaoise being relegated from senior hurling this year for the first time in nearly 60 years. The result would leave no club in Laois kicking and hurling at senior level. Are there many clubs that play both at senior around the country?

Loughmore Castleiney here in Tipperary won the senior hurling and senior football county finals last year, first time it was ever achieved. I think 12 or 13 of them started both finals. Theres 3 other dual teams in senior, Kilenaule, JK Brackens and Eire Og Annacarthy.

Abbeyside/Ballinacourty in Waterford. They contested the Senior Hurling semi final last year and won the football. They lost both senior finals in 2008. The Nire/Fourmilewater in Waterford are another strong dual club in Waterford. Cratloe in Clare. All of these teams have pretty much the same group of players playing both, unlike the big Dublin and Cork clubs who tend to have almost separate panels.

St Finbarrs
Bishopstown
Glen Rovers/St Nicholas
Douglas

The above are the only 4 clubs that are dual in Cork at the moment. Most clubs are dual in that they play both sports but even at this level, being dedicated to one sport gives an advantage (in my opinion that is).

Adare are the only club currently playing senior hurling and senior football in Limerick. In the past twenty years, Hospital-Herbertstown (currently IFC & Prem IHC), Claughaun (IFC & IHC), Monaleen (SFC & IHC) and Bruree (JAFC & IHC) were dual senior at various times as well as Doon (SHC)/Oola (IFC) and Garryspillane (Prem IHC)/Galbally (SFC).

There are three possibilites of other dual clubs emerging this year as Na Piarsaigh and Oola are in the IFC play-offs and Garryspillane should make the Premier IHC semi-final. However, Adare and Galbally are in danger of being relegaated from senior football.

Player participation varies. There are almost no dual players in Na Piarsaigh, four or five in Adare and seven or eight in Doon/Oola and Garryspillane/Galbally. When Bruree and Hospital had senior two teams, nearly all of their starting lineups were filled by dual players.

Come to Dublin, the 2 in Senior Hurling and in Senior Football are nearly replications of one another, Boden, Kilmacud,Cuala, Vins, O'Tooles, Na Fianna etc.

But as mentioned before Dublin is probably the only true dual county in that nearly all clubs compete equally in hurling and fottball, bar a few in the Fingal area
