Your greatest Dublin v Meath memories...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Many will pick 91 from both counties as it was that saga that saved the GAA when it was becoming irrelevant to the public at large Italia 90 etc had made less and less talk about GAA.

Others from Dublin will go with 95, some from Meath will maybe go for 96 or even 2010.

For me its 86, terrible game, wet miserable day. Low scoring sitting in the old Hogan with my elderly late father (he was the one who as a child lifted me over stiles at Canal End to watch more often than not Meath get beat by the dubs). Now here I was a man driving him to a game. That Leinster final will remain with me forever not just cause we won but I think it was the whole circle of life thing.

So what's your favourite memory and why?

Royaldunne what about 1996? Meath were written off going in against the Dubs after Dublin had beaten them the year before by ten points. Meath beat the Dubs and went on to win Sam. Not many people would of tipped the Royals to win Sam that year.

The first Meath v Dublin game I remember watching was 1996 but I was only 8 so I was a bit too young to appreciate the win and up as far as 2002 I took it as a given that we'd beat Dublin anyway.

So for me 2010 was easily the best, putting 5 gaols past Cluxton, I came out of Croker that day bloody floating, I'd never seen anything like it in a Meath v Dublin game. The reasons for picking that one are obviously because we won, it had been 9 years since we beat them, we'd lost 4 on the trot to Dublin and because the 09 game was so flat it looked like Meath v Dublin wasn't really a special fixture anymore, it looked like the players didn't even care that year, 2010 sparked it back to life.

My greatestis by no means my favourite. The last match in 91, the inevitability of the equaliser, wasfollowd by the point that i didn expect, remember thinking it had to end in a draw. And then feeling totally drained, and couldnt believe it was over. It felt like the end of an epoch.
My favouriye was finally beating them in 89, which i didnt expect, with a goal from the legendary Ciaran Duff.
btw, the myth about the gaa becoming irrelevant at the time is a joke. No falloff in crowds whatsoever in 1990 after the world cup, or 91. Bigger crowds at the munster finals than there are now

All games involving meath (apart from the most recent ones) cos there was no quarter asked or given! The toughest and most manly of games but never foul! You just never knew the outcome! 'Foregone conclusion' was never a term used when describing a Dublin V Meath game! Best rivalry in the GAA bar none and always the first game of 'NATIONAL IMPORTANCE' to be played in the championship!

1995. Not so much that is was an almost unique hammering of our closest rival, but that it was such a releif after the previous 7/8 years where there was almost never more than a point between them. I knew Dublin would win the All Ireland after that and had 500 on them at 7/4.

I always enjoy Dubs/Meath games. It is an intense rivalry but there is not acutally the sort of bitterness between supporters that some imagine. To be honest I'd rather be beaten by Meath than any other team in Leinster!

84 Leinster Final for me. Scorching hot day. Meath were on the up and had just won the Centenary Cup. Meath missed a penalty in the first half in front of the Hill. Think John Caffrey was sent off for the Dubs that day too. 89 Leinster Final was also special too after a few years in the wilderness. Ciaran Duff's goal that day was something else.

From when I was old enough to be brought to games in the early 90's it has to be 95 for me(don't remember much of the 91 saga). Scorcher of a day, Hill packed to the rafters, cracking atmosphere and winning by 10 points which is a rarity for us against Meath and my fav player at the time, Paul Clarke, scoring a great fisted goal. Our last big win over our big rivals for 7 years.

i have to say 1986 too. i was only young but was there with my father and brother. obviously the win was great and that stands out but i also remember sitting in the hogan stand and the ref talking to mick lyons and mick lyons just points out to the ref that there is a big fight happenning right behind him, great stuff.
you cant look beyond the 4 game saga either, crazy stuff.

I guess realdub 89 was the one you played in?? :). I get that been personal alright.
Yeah Ollie 96 was special virtually completely new team for Meath and I recall that year we were underdog in first rd v Carlow due to all the success the Eire og club had. To go on beat the dubs Tyrone and then mayo twas a special year. As for those moaning about these threads. This match up still evokes passion now that may have subsided in recent years but it's still there and this coming Leinster final will be taken more seriously as its probably the closest it has been since 10.

1995 was brilliant obviously.

2002 was good too. Ray Cosgrove of all people, destroyed the much lauded, Darren Fay and put Meath back in their box for the rest of the decade.

Mr Cosgrove may have impressed that day but believe me he had little to do with how the rest of the decade panned out.....

96 is kind of special for me , it was when a new era of stars where born especially after the damage caused in 95 , i love playing the Dubs more than anything , i still don't think there's any gaa rivalry like it in the country, it's special and hopefully the game coming up will be
