Donal Vaughan explodes a 'makey uppey' myth!!!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

well done to Donal Vaughan on Hectors GAA programme last night who didnt take the "Parish and Community....Thats what its all about" bait when asked which her would rather:
An AI with the club, or
An AI with Mayo.

He didnt take the bait laid out for him for the sake of the show of going down the route the programme was slanted towards and stuck to his own beliefs!
Vaughan would rather an AI with Mayo rather than an AI with his club!.....but he diplomatically appeased the programme by saying "I think they are two totally different things really"!!
Not really! They are both football at the highest level except wearing a different jersey, one local to you and one your county!

So many people say they would rather a club AI medal rather than an Intercounty AI medal because they want to 'fit in' with the whole "Parish and Community....Thats what its all about" thing but really a medal for lifting LIAM or SAM is what its all about!

Well done Donal Vaughan for telling it like it 'really' is!!!

Oh, and for those who might think priorities are different for club members in Dublin......Donal Vaughan is from Mayo!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

A medal representing ALL rather than SOME is far more valuable

The more happy people the better.

Depends on the person and the situation their club/county is in. The gooch would probably rather an all ireland club medal...

They are completely different. How many St Vincents players are on the Dublin team? How many Castlebar players are on the Mayo team? Last year's All-Ireland final between Dublin and Mayo was the top level. This year's club final was the best of one local area against the best of another.

He is not telling it like it is. You have just stumbled across somebody that agrees with you. It was a hypothetical question anyway. Why not ask Ben O'Connor, for example, as a person that actually has achieved that honor to see which he preferred? The true answer is he probably got immense satisfaction at the time from both (how can you classify the emotion of winning after your training with a team all-year). Looking back he will probably say to win an All-Ireland with Cork in hurling is great , to win a club from an area like Newtownshandrum is simply astonishing.

In fairness a All Ireland is far more likely for him with Mayo then with his own club, Ballinrobe. Well, provided they dont get relegated to inter..

I think it depends on the player really. Conor Gormley would be known as a club man for example though I'd like to think he cares about Tyrone too heh.

...

Very true, Mayo havent won an All Ireland since early fifties and Vaughan has lost in a couple of finals ,so its understandable this would mean more.

People address this question using players opinions , anecdotes , to back up their own argument , simple their telling the thruth when their with you , and appeasing the populous when they disagree , its become the Sophie's choice of the day , second only to the other most annoying question on HS , hurling or football .
Cant understand why people need such definitives , In fairness win both and then maybe your qualified to make an informed decision .

I think if guys are honest they would say an inter-county AI, no one likes to talk down what their club means to them, it's like insulting your family :)

Ive met lads socially , I wont divulge names but their stories and passion in telling them , would not concur with above , again who of us mortals know what a county lad really thinks we are all just guessing , im sure there are those that also know such and such and they give a complete opposite view to what Ive posted .

I think once a fella has been involved at senior inter county level for a few years and are main stays in the panel, ( not team) they couldn't care less about their clubs or the lads who they have played with all of their lives and who helped them reach that level. They become selfish if you like and really only want to win an All ireland for themselves and not the county.

Fair enough Damo, I'm just basing my post on people I know/knew in the game but that's not to say that there isn't those who would put club honours first. I know which one I would rather have won!

AI Club is all about bringing intense joy to your local area and there is a beauty to that. It will never be forgotten in that parish and its the ultimate reward for the locality.
For an inter-county footballer winning an AI puts you in the pantheon of greats. For a Mayo footballer it would mean so much. The All Ireland Club would be forgotten about in a year nationally and in a generation within the county. A winner of Sam Maguire will have their life changed and it will follow them around until they are lowering the coffin.
AI County is the ultimate and no one should apologise for admitting to that.

Suppose its a personnel thing , for me and I wasnt good enough to play anything other than colleges I cant imagine anything bigger than Liam or Sam , but I can only believe the sincerity of lads I spoke to as there were no microphone , cameras etc I often equate to my kids , Ive two , one will always be special because hes my first , the other will always be special cause hes my baby , but dont ask me to choose there both precious .

It dosnt matter what the competition is or the game. Winning is what matters. I just finished playing this year. My biggest regret. I didnt win more. If you are even partly serious about GAA you want to win everything. Top of that list is AI medal(Senior intercounty).
