Minors to Seniors

(Oldest Posts First)

What players, if any, have won an All Ireland Inter-county Minor championship one year and a Senior championship the next?

Not strictly true to topic but Noel Mcgrath won an AI as a 15 year old in 2006, followed up with another in 2007, still a minor in 2008 but almost got three minors. Lost the senior in 09 and won an All Star, won the senior in 2010 with another All Star.

While still under 21 he had 3 All Stars, 1 All Ireland medal, 2 Munster seniors, All Ireland and Munster U21, 2 All Ireland Minors and 1 Munster Minor. I'm open to correction on those.

Some record all the same. Was it ever matched? Clare lads last year maybe?

Not sure but I will put a couple of names forward. Jimmy Barry Murphy Cork 1973 Senior Football and Jimmy Duggan won a Colleges medal with Jarleths and won the all Ireland with Galway in 1966.

Surely some of the Clare players were minor last year?

HURLING - Having looked at the minor and senior rolls of honour since 1966 (Could only find minor records back to this year) this achievement would only have been possible on 9 occasions. Cork winning minor 69' and senior 70', Kilkenny winning minor 73' and senior 74', Kilkenny winning minor 81' and senior 82', Cork winning minor 85' and senior 86', Kilkenny winning minor 91' and senior 92', Cork winning minor 98' and senior 99' Kilkenny winning minor 02' and senior 03', Kilkenny winning minor 08' and senior 09' and Kilkenny winning minor 10' and senior 11'.

I have tried to find team line-ups for these 9 occasions and have only found the more recent ones (since 1990). From what I can find nobody has won a minor and played on the winning senior team the following year, although I would imagine that there are a few panel members that I didn't find.

There are two Clare players who were minor in 12'(reached the All-Ireland semi-final and lost to Dublin) and won All-Irelands in 13', namely, Shane O'Donnell and Bobby Duggan.

FOOTBALL - I'm not going into as much detail with the football. Paddy McBrearty played minor and senior on the same day for Donegal in 2011 and won an All-Ireland in 2012. That's the best I can think of but I'm not a footballing man. Those of you who mentioned Ciarán Kilkenny, he never won a minor. I would imagine that there were a few of the winning Dublin minors of 12' on the winning senior panel of 13.

Tyrone won minors in 2004 and senior in 2005, as well as the double in 2008. I don't think anybody was involved in the senior wins from the corresponding minor win though.
