Sick of all the talk of changing the championship to a champions league format, even in that format you are still going to get the so called weaker teams coming up against the likes of dublin tyrone etc.... manowar (Fermanagh) - Posts: 147 - 07/08/2017 16:12:57 2030383 Link 1 |
Yes, bring the Paudi O'Shea format in. But sadly doesn't look like its going to happen soon enough, I do predict it is coming in, in the next 10-12 years. But under circumstances the back door should stay till there is a new format introduced. oakleafersir (Derry) - Posts: 808 - 08/08/2017 00:45:41 2030737 Link 0 |
Run open draw provincials in early summer. Then open draw All Ireland after that. All teams guaranteed two games and all games are knockout. A few giant-killing games possible, local provincial derbies and a chance of local draws in the All Ireland too. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7345 - 08/08/2017 06:05:19 2030758 Link 0 |
its championship, one game one bite of the apple, you win you go on, lose you're gone, even if you have to play a shield type championship next. As it stands the back door gives a strong team which had a bad day in the championship a chance to regroup and get a run to possibly the big one

after years of banal and boring punditry, colm o'rourke finally says something worth listening to, and articulates what of us at grass roots level have been saying. super 8 is all about Sky, who have a track record of ruining sport where they get involved. Corporate GAA have now become separated from grass roots and the club game will continue to decline as a result totalrecall (Leitrim) - Posts: 916 - 08/08/2017 09:21:29 2030788 Link 0 |
Yes!!!!!! scrap it to hell. its a load of bullsh*t. our game is going to the dogs. interest is being lost and whats more, and a lot of people will agree with me on this. A lot of teams knocked out in the backdoor were happier to get away and get the championship going at home. look at Armagh and Monaghan. what advantage had they over lets say Cavan and Fermanagh by getting to a quarter final. none........

The best idea I've heard in a long time in fairness. Won't happen though. The GAA would rather ensure we watch the super 8's where you're almost guarantee the last match in each group being meaningless. It'll be a huge flop imo and does nothing for the gane

Not a bad idea at all!!!!! And leaves a few weeks mid summer for club championships.

Scrap the back door and play 2 to 3 league games in late October early November. Finish the league around end of March / early April SamOnErrigal (Donegal) - Posts: 1427 - 08/08/2017 11:48:32 2030897 Link 0 |
The qualifiers can at the same time make it easier for the top teams to win the competition and be better for the development of other counties. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4226 - 08/08/2017 12:58:01 2030969 Link 1 |
the problem I see now with the back door is that teams like Monaghan(not this year I know) & Rosocommon win a provincial title, but regardless will still be underdogs and be beaten by a traditional heavy weight..all very well saying they have a provincial, but the hiding Roscommon took yesterday makes absolute rubbish of their provincial title..they might say other wise but sure what game will people remember at years end and in years to come...the back door has had its day and needs to go..some sort of alternative should be introduced...worth a try anyway...Mayo are probably the best "back door" team of recent times..but wouldn't be there at all only for the back door....

Yeah that's an interesting point. Particularly in the case of Roscommon and Monaghan where they were beaten by a team from their own Province. It's still a meaningful piece of silverware though. The team still gets the glory on the day. Smaller teams do need more games and I think B championships etc are proven at this stage to not cut the mustard. I'd be in favour of the league being played in parallel to the All Ireland. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4226 - 08/08/2017 17:58:57 2031211 Link 0 |
But isn't that what's happening now, only they run concurrently (province and qualifiers) and under current format teams are rewarded for doing well provincially by entering the "all ireland" at a later stage.
