That's some endorsement right there!
83% say yes!

Dara O'Cinneide's GAA Nua programme continually emphasised his greatness during the week also

Like all greats, will he only be truly appreciated when he is gone?

A good defence and a good team helps a lot. How good would he have been in the Leitrim goals last Sunday? He is a good keeper but there have been many good ones over the years.

That misses the point completely Brown Cow, you see the players in front of him are only so good/effective, BECAUSE of him

Far from the greatest. Charlie Nelligan was and is the greatest keeper, between Paddy Cullen and Cluxton they still couldn't match him. When he has nine All Ireland medal we can return to the debate. You would swear that Gaelic football didn't start till 2011.............

Cluxton would be the first fella to avoid getting drawn into stuff like this

It would embarrass him a wee bit

No, definitely not.

Excellent at what he does, accurate kickouts, good organiser. But not the greatest.

Ah look, Cluxton would be up there all right there no debating that but sure there'll be plenty of lads that do this better or that better but overall you'd have to say that goalies over the last 7 or 8 years are looking at him as the standard no doubt. Having a solid keeper gives the backs confidence and that makes his job easier as a result so he certainly has played a big part in Dublin's success.

Which is why he ran down the tunnel at the end of the 2011 final to avoid talking thus drawing attention to himself even more.

They had just inched to within 13 titles of Kerry and he simply ran off. Strange.

it's not just the fact that he has been a very good shot stopper down the years, it's the fact he has revolutionised the whole the sport in terms of kick outs. The pace at which he gets the ball back out, lono kick out or short, his ability to see what's ahead of him, add to that the fact that he actually is a very good shot stopper, and he is really good at winning high ball, it's rare that he makes any mistake and when it is, it is examined and re-examined by analysts. He has shown unbelievable consistency, with the way people talked after the kerry game last year for example you'd swear Stephen was desperate and buckled under pressure, yet every single one of his kickoiuts in the second half were won by dublin players and if I'm not mistaken we won 18 out of 22 kickouts in that game.

I digress though, people will have their opinions but he is the greatest I've seen by a distance

on a sidenote how lucky have dublin been with goalkeepers and their longevity.. Cullen...oleary.. cluxton

don't think any county can claim to has one position so consistently sown down

Hard to say as my knowledge of goalkeepers from 1884 - 1980s wouldn't be great. He is definitely the best goalkeeper of the last 30 years anyway.

That ice cool free to win 2011 final was unbelievable. The precision in his kick outs is phenomenal. His leadership skills are top notch. Yes, he has bad days but who doesn't. He hasn't made many mistakes over the years, the one that stands out was against Armagh in 20003. You remember goalkeeping mistakes more than any other player so to only have maybe on in 15 years or so is not too bad at all.

If there was a transfer market in the morning, Kerry, Mayo, and Tyrone would all gladly accept him.

He's a class act and has changed how people view the sport with his kickouts. Maybe the managers/coaches saw the opportunity for the tactic but I don't think any goalkeeper could have or has really executed the kickouts the way Cluxton can. Add on to that he's a good shot stopper and good under the high ball - never mind that he's pinged a few 45s in his time - there's plenty scope to consider him one of the greatest players to have played the game, never mind in his position.

How many players can you look at over the years and think "that fella changed how people look at the game"?

That's my own view of, I know plenty will disagree.

I think Cluxton is the best keeper ever, no matter what anybody says he has redefined the role of keeper. His kickouts are unreal and then he can go up a kick over a 50-metre free.

The best I have seen for sure. Mayo would have won last year only for his kicking when the pressure was really on in the second game. I've said it for the last few years, he will be the biggest loss of them all to Dublin when he retires.

Not maybe the greatest shot stopper of all time but at everything else, kick outs, free kicks, leadership, he is the best I've ever seen.

Not easy to skip through eras and pick a current as the best ever. However he brought a massive change to the GK role. Someone goes on about not having 9 medals but how many GKs could claim to be one of the big reasons a team has won AIs ? GKs were expected to do a good job at the back and be able to kick the ball into the middle of the park. He has made the role be pivotal to success. Does a Dublin game go by without the pundits talking about how the opposition have to counter Stephen Cluxton? Unheard of for a keeper to be analysed to such extent. He has been brilliant for the game and the goalkeeping appreciation society.

Slayer,
as a fella who's opinion I would rate, can I ask, genuinely, why do u think so many people from all corners of the country would disagree with you, as that poll and the comments here from all over Ireland would testify to?
Are you surprised so many people would agree that he is the greatest?

This is not in anyway a smart arse reply, I am genuinely curios as to your POV on other people's POV if you get me!? Especially all the non Dubs fans who would say is he is the best.

Sound
