Sligo deserved the win today , this could be a interesting match as Mayo aren't in top form at all. But I'll have to go for a Mayo win. Mayo 5+ oakleafersir (Derry) - Posts: 808 - 07/05/2017 21:20:00 1985053 Link 0 |
Every chance Sligo can get a result

I saw the Sligo under 21s a few weeks ago and was well impressed, some really promising players , they had a great workout in New York and put up 1 21, so I believe the future is bright. Can they beat Mayo? probably not but if Mayo don't have themselves in the right frame of mind it could be a tricky day. Sligo will cause a big shock in the next year or two... It's hard to see us getting a result against Mayo. They're still at the top level of teams in my opinion. The biggest problem in Sligo is in defence and midfield. The forwards, Murphy, Cawley, Coen, Marren, Hughes, Brehony, are a match for any county side. Mayo will more than likely prevail but Sligo might get a bit of a run in the qualifiers. letsgosligo (Sligo) - Posts: 98 - 07/05/2017 22:41:05 1985075 Link 0 |
If the game is in castlebar, sligo wont win it. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 07/05/2017 23:09:46 1985078 Link 0 |
Mayo have a terrible home record over the past few years, losing more games than they've won.

Mayo should win but if head's are not right or form is not good on the day then Sligo can take advantage. I think though Mayo will be fully focused and win. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 08/05/2017 09:02:03 1985118 Link 0 |
The championship facts of the past 10 seasons are listed below. Bar last year, in both the connaught championship and the back door, Mayo have played 11 times and won 10 in castlebar. I still think that Sligo wont win nor will they come close in castlebar. 2007 Mayo 1-19 Cavan 3-7 2008 Mayo 3-11 Sligo 0-7 2009 Mayo 3-18 Ros 0-7; Mayo 2-12 Galway 1-14 2012 Mayo 4-20 Leitrim 0-10 2013 Mayo 5-11 London 0-10 2014 Mayo 0-13 Ross 1-9; Mayo 3-14 Galway 0-16 2016 Mayo 0-12 Galway 1-12 Mayo 2-14 Fermanagh 1-12; Mayo 2-17 Kildare 0-14 Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 08/05/2017 09:26:11 1985126 Link 0 |
I was actually wrong about the losing part, in the NFL Mayo have a record of 13 wins, 13 losses and two draws in McHale Park since 2010. http://www.irishnews.com/sport/gaafootball/2017/04/01/news/mayo-should-survive-thanks-to-a-rare-home-comfort-984526/?ref=sh Fair enough that championship and league are different beasts, but even the couple of qualifiers that we won last season against Fermanagh and Kildare were terrible struggles, with more than a fair share of fortune deciding the outcome. Sligo may not win the next day, but I don't foresee a drubbing like the Connacht final two years back. It may well be closer than people think, especially given Mayo's very up and down form this season. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 08/05/2017 09:47:15 1985129 Link 0 |

The league counts for nothing when it comes to bigger teams in championship time. I think that you will see Mayo win this game by at least 7 points if not a lot more.

With only a week to go now. I have feeling that Sligo will rattle Mayo when they go out. I think we could be in for a good enough match if Sligo go out and play to their full ability. oakleafersir (Derry) - Posts: 808 - 14/05/2017 22:30:10 1986681 Link 0 |

Mayo by 12 plus.. Has to be, 2nd best team in the country last year against a mid div 3 team. They need to lay down a marker now and show they mean business this year. Their team is unchanged really in the last 3/4 years so well able to beat Sligo in second gear. Anything less and the same old questions will be asked.. Mayo are in the situation Sligo were against New York. Hammer Sligo and it's "ah well Sligo are nowhere near that level" or only win by a few points and it will be "Ah Mayo are going backwards". yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 15/05/2017 11:51:03 1986768 Link 0 |
We'll win on Sunday and we'll learn very little from that win unless some players perform poorly and don't look up to championship form. A few new faces and tactics tried in the league and we stayed in Division 1. Unlike some previous managers we didn't get to a League semi or final. We usually then peaked in a championship quarter final with performances dropping off by semi or final. Our defence was seriously improved and even when our forwards were lacking in front of the posts Keegan, Higgins, Durcan and Boyle often exploited space running from deep to kick vital scores. We were poor in many championship games last year, losing the Connacht title, lucky to get through some and peaked for the final and replay. If, as expected, we play Galway it'll be a serious test abd hot-tempered. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7345 - 15/05/2017 12:24:19 1986784 Link 0 |
I wouldn't write off Sligo I'm sure they will be up for it Sunday. Going by this years league it's the age old question of which Mayo team will turn up! Plenty of ye thought Galway hadn't a hope last year and look what happened. Spoddgy (Mayo) - Posts: 660 - 16/05/2017 20:53:59 1987291 Link 0 |
Mayo will win easy in the end. Sligo may well blast out of the blocks but mayo in castlebar is a bridge to far for Sligo. Mayo by 7+. tribeinbrum (Galway) - Posts: 4155 - 16/05/2017 21:19:11 1987301 Link 0 |
Monaghan and Cavan this spring and Galway last summer made things difficult for Mayo in Machale Park because both northern counties and Galway have a defensive system in place. Sligo on the other hand don't and are wide open in defence i would expect Mayo to score at least 2 20 on Sunday and to win pulling up.
