Gooch Coopers comments..

(Oldest Posts First)

Interesting to read his comments on the level of commitment needed now for an intercounty player. Getting to a near unmanageable level and will only suit some jobs and lifestyles. Hardly where we want the game to keep going?

The commitment is a double edged sword. On the one hand its good to see their dedication, but its also turning people off from playing the game too. There is a hurling club in Galway city (and not a particularly successful one) who take urine/blood samples from its players to make sure they haven't been boozing and their diet is right.
A lot of guys would say "no thanks" to that type of thing.

It's been like this easily since 2000, at the top county level its a game for students and teachers with plenty of free time in the summer.

I have said for a long time the amount of training done is a joke for amateurs. It is wreckin club football, once a week with club once with county,no big bills and no county's in serious debt

All Irelands are now won on hunger with a bit of Luck.

I reckon Mayo could sneak sam, I think they lack a M Murphy B Brogan type forward, but they have savage hunger. Kerry have no hunger or drive to win Sam again. I feel Tyrone and Mayo are the only top teams that have this desire.

Gooch is such a natural talent not surprised to hear of this. I know there is a long standing debate on this forum in another thread between gym monkeys and pure talent. I hope the latter is not alienated from the game if the fitness demands do not level off at some point as the game in general will be the poorer. This is in no way a slight against the successful counties who seemingly are fitness gurus as that is their reward but would hate to see the art of the game being compromised indefinitely.
