The match report I read said he came on as a sub for 90 seconds at the end of the game.

I played my first hurling game last year at the age of 28, enjoyed it very much, even though the team I played for ended up getting hockied. The experience did give me pause as to why this should be the case, and I concluded that it was simply down to tradition. Even though my club back in Ireland had hurling teams, it was really thought of as an after-thought, with most of the players also being footballers. Any promising footballers would always be preserved strictly for football.

Bottom line is that it will always be difficult to transplant sports to areas where there is little tradition or will to do so.

The discussion on this topic, Kilkenny football; seems to have wandered a bit. Maybe it should be renamed Cavan hurling?

I thought at the time that he started but was taken off after a few minutes.

The same (but the opposite) in Kilkenny.

I see this annual chestnut has reappeared.

People thought the Kilkenny hurlers were going to be down for a few years but low and behold they're might be life in the old 'cat' yet! So this thread, or some variant, pops up again.

What codes of gaelic a county has a preference, a tradition for should be left to look after their affairs. Cavan is a great footballing county that brought us many legends of the game. They're last Senior Ulster Football title was in 1997. They have been successful at provincial U21 level recently. They are a small rural county.

The 'concern' shown for Kilkenny football, or criticism of, is begrudgery plain and simple.

I've played gaelic football and hurling. I'm fond of both games but if i'm completely honest their are more skills to master in hurling. Both are our national games.

Gaelic football will never be in danger of extinction. However hurling needs to be nurtured in Kerry, Carlow, Laois, Offaly, Meath, Wicklow, Kildare, Roscommon, Mayo, Down and Antrim. Counties where it has a certain amount of tradition. Apologies if i've missed any notables. If in 20 years time 3 of these counties could compete strongly at Liam McCarthy level, great progress would have been made. In the last 20 years we have lost Offaly and Wexford at that level. Hopefully Wexford are on the way back. Laois also ran Kilkennny to a 3pt victory in Leinster in 1998 and 2pts in 1995. Meath were beating Offaly and Wexford in the league in the mid 90s. So there has been major decline in hurling counties/counties with strong hurling heartlands, and i'm just skimming over analysis.

Seen as Kilkenny Hurlers lost @ home to Wexford in the league for the first time in 60 years yesterday.
Do Kilkenny as a county need to cut their losses with the Football and put all their energies into the Hurling? :)

Of course they want to play hurling having spent time there and attended matches in St Kieran's College I get it , its institutionalised they are born into a culture no argument , I posted as the pop at Westmeath lads is a bit unfair they are trying to be a dual county from what I can see and maybe a discussion for another day that's not the wisest move

i wasnt having a pop at Westmeath,I know they promote hurling,I was just thinking if a kk football team were on the end of such a scoreline we would be hearing lots about it today.

Ha! I haven't been on hogan stand in months, I log in and what do you know, a thread about Kilkenny football on page one of the forum! It seems the national obsession with how people in Kilkenny choose to spend their leisure time continues unabated.

The question is either the lack of investment in football or more likely why Kilkenny are dog useless at it. It isn't the hardest of sport in the gaa world surely if a team of fit Kilkenny lads took to the field they could be competitive enough?

Let's hope they stick to the football. Don't want them the scrutinising some of the other 'activities' we get up to in our leisure time down by the Nore. :-)

Fit Kilkenny lads do "take to field" and are very competitive at it. They play in that "dog useless" completion otherwise known as the All-Britain Inter County Football Championship. This includes other "dog useless" teams like London, Warwickshire, Lancashire, Scotland and more. They actually won the Dog Useless Cup the year before last.
