Mayo 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Mayo are the highest profile team to never win an All Ireland. GAA within the county is extreme and 24/7....I have lived in a few other counties and the goldfish like obsession is not in counties....or at least I have not seen it.

This particular team may finished or not, this summer will tell a tail. Those jumping with excitement that Mayo are going to simply fall of the face of the earth are misguided in my opinion and I can only remember following Mayo since 1996.

Looking at commented it appears Mayo might as well concede the Tyrone and Donegal games but we all know Mayo are at their best when written off.

yew-tree, how can you call yourself a Mayo supporter if you don't know that Mayo ever won the All-Ireland. FYI they have won it three times .
The last being 1951.

Replying To tommy132:  "I think everyone is over reacting with Andy Moran, since he changed jobs hes been flying fit, he now just runs his own gym in castlebar so hes pretty much a professional athlete so well able to play all these games..the u21 lads need more time to get used to senior football, in another county they could be thrown in and let them learn in games but mayo supporters dont have patience for that, look at Conor Loftus finall starting on Sunday and now hes not up to it, its very hard for them..
Mayo have been pathetic so far, no real urgency with them in the games BUT it was the same last year when the lost 4 and won 3 so its nothing new to see them struggle in the league.
I love how Galway ppl are starting to pipe up now cause they are winning game, its gas.."
Hardly spouting up.. One or two posters having an opinion. Mayo are still the best team in Connacht, even if Galway bet them last year. However Mayo will want to show some form before they play Sligo in the Championship, going into that having lost 4 league games on the trot and relegation to Div 1 wont be heplful.. Galway still have an awful lot of building to do..

Current high profile teams I think Yew Tree is talking about. Dublin, Donegal, Tyrone, Kerry.

Who is actually making the management calls at the moment? Is it Rochford or McEntee?

Replying To Spoddgy:  "My lifetime Galway have won 5 championship games in croker. Fair enough two all Ireland's were won and a draw in a final but that seems like a lifetime ago now those days of Gaelic football changed in 02/03 when Armagh and Tyrone reached the summit and the game began to change into a more systematic approach than a reliance on the more natural game. Some teams have adapted some have struggled to find the right systems and players. I wouldn't be surprised should Galway meet Mayo this in the Connacht championship they can beat Mayo but will Galway make an impact outside Connacht? We all know hope springs eternal!"
Galway footballers won 7 games in Croke Park from 1998-2001 including 2 All-ireland finals
Granted nothing won there since then

That was a great Galway team with some class footballers. I was privileged to see them a few times. A team that would be great in any era.

God help us, Horan to be back again after he losing us 2 All Ireland titles, have you ever seen a manager in an All Ireland Final sitting in the dugout when his team needs changes and doing nothing, well I have and he cost us the chance to win an All Ireland that year

Rather than complaining about who's in charge maybe you'd do the job yourself or, at the very least, enlighten us on how things might be improved?

Hard to believe Mayo fans slating James Horan the man did an unbelievable job for with Mayo. Very easy to pick holes after a defeat we can all do that.

this is exactly what he wrote "Mayo are the highest profile team to never win an All Ireland"

I mean you can't be clearer than that. That is not ambiguous.

That states that Mayo have never won an All-Ireland.

I think that's a good point re: the goldfish bowl like existence of a Mayo footballer. Granted Mayo isn't a county that I'm overly familiar outside of a couple of weekends away but I've yet to meet a Mayo person who didn't have an interest in the senior football team!

People used to talk about all the hype getting to Dublin players in the past but I think they way in which the Dublin players can be completely anonymous (almost) up here is a big plus for them when preparing for big games. I think it was Denis Bastick said in an interview once before one of the finals that he could walk around the city centre all day and no one would be coming up to him asking about the big match. I doubt that is true of any of the Mayo players walking around Castlebar, Westport or Ballina for example.

This is a very good Mayo team, regardless of how the League goes they will not be far away come August/Semptember. I've said on here a number of times since about 2012 that I think this Mayo team will win the All-Ireland and I stand by that. They're so close, the stars will align for them in the next couple of seasons.
