damo

we have internationals and privincial players in my rugby club and plenty of volunteers helped them along the way who dont get paid. same in soccer and other professional sports. Im a volunteer coach myself and the payment i get is the enjoyment and fun from coaching. no inter county players in my gaa club......but we are trying our best.

i be proposing the same payment per championship match irrespective of county , and you are correct you would have to look at paying same to camogie and ladies footballers, and probably pay ring meagher rackard cups as well , it just an idea for floatation,

Nobody seems to want to do the sums , we live in an equal society see Murifield yesterday , so I take it we are all in favour of Ladies Footballers and Camogie players getting paid , How much do we intend to pay the semi professional in London ?
Should a player in Leitrim Wicklow be paid the same basic as a player in Kerry Dublin , a hurler in Meath get the same as a Kilkenny hurler ? should it be performance result based ?
Open to replies to anyone but Ormo"
Once the 'what's in it for me' culture takes hold we'll be on the slope to performance related payments, wage structures and transfer fees. Under current GAA rules a player can play for the county he works and/or lives in. If hurling or football becomes his job he can be enticed to go anywhere.

I agree , anyone naïve to think it would begin and end with a lets give the lads 200 euro a week really doesn't know the real world .

damo - i see your point but do you think it fair that for a game in croke park that stewards, the referee, the groundsman, the bar staff, programme sellers, the person singing the national anthem, the tv pundits, the physios, may be getting paid but the players are not.

Absolutely its fair ,
because its an amateur game of which no one is being fleeced , no one who got into the game was ever advised of riches to come , my own lad probably similar to anyone in same position is on two u17 inter county squads hurling and football , hes out four nights a week and every Saturday , game with club on Sunday . yep thank god for Fridays , why does he do it , why do I sit in a car park listening to the radio for his gym sessions to end , he does it because he loves the sport , he does it because he wants to wear the jersey , equally he wants to work as a child physiologist, he has career ambitions as Im sure many others do.
Will he ever pull on the blue in front of 80 thousand who knows we can dream , but he will put in until a time were he's dropped the same time and effort as many who may get to live out their dreams .
Many seem to feel its a chore to play for your county un paid , its a privilege , listen to Lee Chin Michael Murphy on the toughest trade , C Kilkenny when he came back from OZ , they get it , look beyond the 80,000 crowd there are hundreds of lads putting in savage effort the same as the starts they may never get the rewards of the stars

whats the view lads if a player get a sponsored car , is that the slippery slope to prefessionalism , would that player now be wanting something more on top of the car is it naive to think that player wont want anything more -personally i dont think so

personally i dont have a problem with it and good luck to any guy who gets one -i dont believe anybody like your lad damo who is striving to make a county team is going to be driven (excuse the pun!!) by the lure of a free car or a few quid. The drive is to make the county team and perform as best they can ,, and the bit of glory that comes with it

think myself the players should get a payment not full time professionalism but a token few quid- just thought id float the idea seems -its probably not a good one

Honestly its not a bother , Ive seen many a lad get the call after training , the head drop the letter handed with the promise of we will look at you again , their world has crashed
The only thing I ever said to my lad was to enjoy it you never know were it will take you and you never know when it will end. Never take it for granted.

I think it is only fair that people who are working to facilitate the playing of a game in Croke Park, or any ground, should get paid. However, it annoys me when I see and hear highly paid TV pundits, make personal attacks on the character or commitment of the unpaid players playing in front of them. They are earning money off the backs of the players but all too often fail to show the necessary effort, ability and commitment to learn and understand the ethics and the basics required to analyse a game fairly and properly. Personal attacks on players simply illustrates their inability to do the professional job that they are being paid to do.

Inter-provincial level in theory should be a step above inter-county level.

5 teams consisting of the 4 provinces of Munster, Connaught, Ulster, Leinster and Dublin in a league format home and away with the top 2 into the Railway Cup final.
