Some people prefer Gaelic football...good luck to them, some people prefer Westlife to Thin Lizzy. However the GAA clearly give preference to football over hurling. Hurling people need to give serious consideration to setting up a separate hurling organisation. There is zero promotion of hurling in many counties, infact speaking to some Donegal people it is actually being discouraged as some within GAA at senior levels in clubs feel they could not compete in both so best to promote just football (im sure the opposite happens in hurlings counties also) and be competitive in that. There is certainly a logic to this however it means the game will never grow in Ulster and Connacht and dual county boards will tend to lean towards where there is more money. Separate organisations may benefit both and at least decent club fixture list for both could be organised bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4624 - 03/03/2017 20:20:27 1963299 Link 2 |

Its dual. A duel is when lads in the 1800s shot each other in a controlled environment for sport and honor .. ....

Can't stand hurling. I'd have to be paid to watch it. Love football. However if the gaa is meant to represent both equally this new format does not help hurling one bit. And even I can say that as a football man if that is a term? royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 03/03/2017 21:46:06 1963339 Link 0 |
If you Google hurling counties they tell you that 14 counties compete for the Liam McCarthy Cup, 7 in Christy Ring, 7 Nicky Rackard, now they are wrong on a few counties but based on that map the GAA should be focussing on the weaker counties in the Liam McCarthy as well as the Christy Ring teams and Nicky Rackard , try to get a strong and larger number of teams competing for Liam, it will take time but can be done, do the GAA want that? Of course not, why would they want to spend money on a plan that in their view will probably fail, 'it's the counties fault' is the line they will keep using. An ideal vision is 32 or more strong teams competing for Liam but when they can see the obvious problem in football where 7 or 8 teams are miles ahead of the rest yet the GAA do nothing to redress the imbalance and narrow the gap how can hurling in weaker counties progress, we need people with proper vision over the GAA who try to fix the problems and imbalance and not bankers and businessmen who want to make money and then throw a few quid to develop massive stands and pitches when the grounds we have are ok as a token gesture riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 03/03/2017 22:39:55 1963355 Link 1 |
rather than fans of one code knocking the other (we get enough of that on the anti rugby oooh rte hates gaa thread) lets have some suggestions . i think myself the super 10 may be the way to go - or maybe play provincial championships with privincial winners going through and the other two semis and quarter finalists being made from the super 10 or maybe from the league janesboro (Limerick) - Posts: 1502 - 03/03/2017 22:52:43 1963357 Link 1 |
Don't go bagging on Connaught and Ulster promotion of hurling. Hurling is only strong where you have nice flat land because you need a good field for it. Even the top Hurling counties tend be stronger for football where the land is only fit for spuds and sheep. West Clare, west Galway, west Limerick, west Cork etc tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1109 - 03/03/2017 23:14:24 1963363 Link 0 |
I'm glad people are starting to talk about this. And yeah, its not about hurling v football (it shouldn't have to be either or), its about growing and promoting both games. I'd imagine most people don't want hurling to get preferential treatment to football, they just want equal consideration. Marlon_JD (Tipperary) - Posts: 1823 - 03/03/2017 23:15:24 1963364 Link 1 |
I couldn't agree more Damo. What I can't understand is why there is a hurling governing body and a Gaelic football governing body like every other major sport around the world

thats a real pity since your own county are doing substantially better at hurling than they are in football.

There you go...each to their own! I'm more or less the exact opposite of you! That's one of the reasons why I think there should be 2 separate organisations for hurling and football. If you are a football man you shouldn't be obliged to follow hurling and if you're a hurling fan you shouldn't be obliged to follow football. Personally I'd prefer go to see Galway Utd or Connacht rugby than go to Navan tomorrow -- and I don't even like rugby!!!

I think a 10 team league as part of the hurling championship could be a great competition. Top 6 qualify for playoffs. 2 up 2 down would make division 2 really interesting also. Could have Provincial championships also. If you win your province and have missed out on the playoffs you get added in. Provincial champions could be seeded so they are the opposite side of the draw. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4226 - 04/03/2017 10:15:32 1963414 Link 0 |
love hurling, love football, which i prefer at any one time depends on which is being played better,at the moment hurling but that has changed over time. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 07/03/2017 12:05:02 1964980 Link 1 |
I'd go along with that.

Hurling needs to do something to keep its exposure, the provincial championships are a farce, when I seen Kerry lumped into Leinster it makes a laughing stock of it even more! Pinkie (Wexford) - Posts: 4100 - 07/03/2017 14:50:46 1965046 Link 1 |
