Quoting Mr Colm O'Rourke

" You can't coach a donkey to be a race horse"

In relation to the daft noise being made about Dublin's finances

He's absolutely right

At least there's still the odd decent Meath man still around.. a rare sight on this website

Replying To jimbodub:  "Can't wait to read Ewan McKenna's next article on Mayo's big spending.. wha!!

Listen no doubt there's money being spent on coaching n Dublin, but that investment doesn't get spent on the Dublin senior football team.

In reality Mayo have been bailed out by the GAA after the McHale Park fiasco, saving Mayo GAA €5 million over the course of the loan, does anyone else find that a little distasteful?

Bailed out to the tune of €5 million, yet still spending big off the back of it!

Hardly fair is it? :) hardly a level playing ground!!

Sorry but Mayo have now spent many millions on this team and now lead the pack on spending

It proves that money doesn't guarantee success, it helps, it puts all the best gear at your feet, but just like owning a set of expensive golf clubs, they are of no use without a good swing!!"
Mayo are still paying the loan. Also factor in the cost of travel and accomodation for 30 plus panel in Dublin 5 times over peak season.

that nobody recognises this shows how relevant and valuable this thread is on both sides of the argument, there is huge amounts of money unaccounted for in various counties of which dublin would be one of the bigger ones due to such a large backroom team

Yep

Yeah at a far reduced rate thanks to the GAA buying your toxic debt, and giving you favourable rates saving Mayo GAA €5 million over the course of the original loan..

That's sort of relevant considering how much Mayo GAA is now pumping into one panel of players

On the travel side of things, many teams face the same but spent a lot less than Mayo, true dual counties such as Dublin have multiple teams in both codes across all age groups travelling all over the country, yet still spent less than Mayo in 2016

It's not all about spending money though.. If it was Mayo would be completely bankrupt!

The whole funding arrangements need to be audited, I think Mayo are not the only county with Skeletons in their closets, I would be in total support of every county board being audited and a serious look at funding then.

Just on the couple points other lads have raised in terms of travel costs, there are huge number of county players from other counties living and working in Dublin in the any cases their is more of a panel livinging Dublin than in their counties. Mayo themselves put on training sessions in Dublin for their Dublin based players and they are not the only county, so teams are happy to suckle at Dublins infrastructure when it suits them. Equally both Kerry and Mayo have held their fundraising events in Dublin.

The funding issue, is and always has been a damp squib, pound for pound for what Dublin make the GAA, for what they receive for a population of the country it's minuscule really, sometimes I think it's a miracle we have done so well and the game has done so well,

I would be a strong advocate, of decentralising funding, let each county generate their own income through the gate, tv, commercial, corporate etc. It's the only fair way. Sport is competitive on and off the field. There is a great deal of a sense of entitlement in the GAA, with more being taken then contributed. If counties were self reliant and less dependent i think it would rootout the culture of "we deserve" and engage people with a better skill set and county board level. Would only be good for the evolution of the game. To be honest I think this will be inevitably what will happen in the modern context sport exists in.
