Shame on Tipperary supporters

Successful counties:

Dublin - poor hurling following
Cork - poor football following
Tipp - poor football following
Kerry - poor hurling following
I'm not even going to dignify Kilkenny's inclusion on this list

Galway are really the only county that this doesn't apply to, so kudos to them!

Am I missing something? Shame on you Tipperary :D

Think Tipp are being hard done by here. What's Clare,Warerford and Limerick's home crowds in the league? And Carlow,Wicklow,Offaly,Laois, etc? And your right about Kilkenny.Never mind their fans, they can't even field 15 players! There was 700 at Semple stadium. Is there a lot more going to a lot of other counties home games?Good call realdub,Galway certainly do have a decent following for both codes.

Munster football is Cork and Kerry. The other four minnows, bar the very odd year, have been downtrodden for decades and the annual beatings break a counties spirit and the supporters just give up."
You could say that about most County's in fairness

In other Sports for the main competition they have this novel idea where they bundle similar level teams into a group where they compete against each other - its called a league! And it works!

They also run a Cup in parallel (could be the Provincial Championship) to the league.

Sorry - Couldn't stop myself. Thank God the league has started. Dubs brought a great atmosphere to Cavan yesterday - What other ground had the away support singing?

We're in for a fair old battle in Division 4 - but at least its achievable. Every match is important, most other matches are of interest. I like this time of the year,

Ban,how the hell did Westmeath fail to win yesterday?Yes i am still peeved over losing money yesterday. Two time Leinster finalists. They get relegated from Div 1 to Div 4 in succession.Surely if they had anything about them they would have started off Div 4 with a home win to Carlow. No disrespect to Carlow but Westmeath were 1/6 in bookies and Bernard Flynn said a Waterford and Westmeath double at 4/5 was money in the bank! And Cribben was on radio during the week saying they were raring to go!

Not only that, but Westmeath started off going 1-1 to 0-0 ahead after three minutes.Happy days.Handy win here i was thinking. Before i knew it Carlow were 1-3 to 1-1 ahead.Itchy bum time forvthe rest of the game, sweating buckets waiting for updates on RTE,Hoganstand,Carlow and Westmeath GAA Twitter. Finally ye go 2-10 to 1-10 ahead in the last minute with a James Dolan goal. All that can go wrong now is an injury time Carlow goal.Happy days but still need the full time whistle. It was then my heart sunk as to my horror i checked the Hoganstand live scores and saw 2-10 beside Carlow and also FT.I was set to win a nice few bob.It was a torturous couple of hours with a cruel blow.As a result i hope Westmeath get relegated to Div 5!

My post was in relation to the great year the Tipperary footballers had last year and to go from the massive high of playing in front of 40000 in August in croke park in an all Ireland semi final. Then come back and have 300 or so supporters for their first league game is embarrassing. The players deserve more respect

It's not embarrassing, shaggy. It is reality.I would have predicted a crowd of around 1,000.They got 700 so not too far off.It is what it is.As bennybunny said, there was 2,300 at Tipp v Cork championship game in Semple.Prob 500 from Cork and 1,300 from Tipp. There is no surprise here.I hope Tipp get a few thousand for their Munster games this year and that is when you may see a bounce from last years heroic escapades.

Westmeath have been in massive decline for a while now. I was not surprised with the result, and to be fair a win would not have flattered Carlow

Our showing in the last 2 Leinster Finals represents how weak province it is. Sorry we couldn't win a few quid for you. I look forward now to a massive game in Limerick this weekend. This is our Championship - Up Westmeath

They played a very well contested Munster Final in Cork on a beautiful day in 2009.
There was a mere 9,000 at that game. Says it all really"
True. That is a reflection of the level of support. There were not too many bandwagoners there that day. In 2010 (or was it 2011?), they played each other again in a very competitive qualifier game that went extra time. It was a sunny July evening if memory serves - there was only half the attendance there again (if even that?).

There is an incorrect perception out there that Tipp are doing something amazing in football.
The majority of the TIpp panel play (I'd estimate) three or less club games each year with some only playing 1 and last years midfielder and centre forward played no club games at all last year. This hasn't improved one bit in 20/30 years.
Tipp's success isbased around the Development squads and the players who can't make the hurling panels. If you aren't in these Development squads then you are highly unlikely to ever play football for Tipp as there are simply no club matches.
Football in Tipp is still very much the poor relation. It barely exists at Club level outside of underage in many clubs. Many adult teams that are Junior or Intermediate wouldn't even have a training session and would only tog out if the hurling was over.
So to get 700 at a League match against Antrim (who couldn't be expected to travel) is fantastic in my opinion.

Really don't see the relevance of Cavan's or any other counties hurling team to the Tipp footballers disappointing support as outlined by the OP.

Has anyone asked the Tipp team if they were disappointed by the support or are we just having a pop at a team on the up for not having a crowd in February. If the point was to try and say they have fair weather fans then they're in good company, as every county up and down the country has the same.

Sure the railway cup games with the creme de la creme playing, what were the crowds like at that?

700 at a game with virtually no chance of away supporters isn't bad, also consider it was the first round with nothing essentially at stake as yet, so no I dont think its disappointing at all.

to be fair, though, when was the last time Monaghan hurling team got to an all-Ireland semi, or quarter, or last 12, or even entered the blooming competition, ridiculous comparison.

Anyway, was 722 at the game, 700 or so prob from tipp, couple of years ago this game would have draw only 100 or 200, being blown out of proportion. For counties unlucky enough to only have one team to follow it costs a lot of money especially with a family to be going to both hurling and football games

I see Parkinson having a go too saying its a disgrace.
Why does it bother people outside of Tipp because it certainly doesnt inside of Tipp.
I've heard some amount of Tipp people saying they'd burst every football in the county if they could - the interest just isnt there because its a hurling county.
Personally I like football and play it and went to most of the championship games last year but a match on a cold Sunday in an empty stadium didnt appeal to me. I might go Sunday, I might not.
I dont feel I should be ashamed of myself because of it either.

And you'd be right too. Maybe other counties should be ashamed that a county with a passing interest in football were reasonably close to getting to an All Ireland.
This is the same county that a few years ago had a captain at the time who played no club football for a few years due (including his year as captain) to his club not entering a team.
Tipp football has a big battle on it's hands to keep their heads above water due to the constraints but are coping admirably with what they have. I'd worry about other former football powerhouses who have a whole host of clubs and players and yet can't produce a decent club or county team.
I know the players don't care about the small support, they'd love more but they appreciate the hardcore people who are always there
