Slaughtneil. A team like no other

If they had one code to concentrate on from here on in I would back them all the way. Giving the two codes equal attention it's going to be a disadvantage. Hopefully they can do the business in Feb and it would be a great headache for both Slaughneill and the GAA to have. How would they choose which code is played on St Patrick's day?

I'm wrong actually. St. Finbarr's of Cork got to both the All-Ireland hurling & football finals in 1980/81. Anyone know what happened then? Were they even played together in those days? Originally St. Patrick's Day hosted the Railway Cup finals.

I think the two matches were played on different dates but I could be mistaken?

Great achievement. Fine club. An example to all clubs. Get out there and promote both sports for men and women . Set your ego to one side and let players enjoy playing. Anything can happen. What they have done may never be repeated but you can have dreams and working on those is great... Well done Sleacht Neil.. Honorable mention to Rosenallis of Laois

A question about the fact in the first post about the first team to win in three codes. I believe Myshall in Carlow won senior hurling, football and camogie in 1986 (though the men would have been under the Naomh Eoin name, and the women under the Myshall name).

Must've been intermediate. MLR were there first club from Carlow to win Leinster senior hurling.

Apologies, I thought it was county titles.

Ah Sure I remembered it off the top of my head! :)
I got a book a few years ago, which I can't remember the name now (it's at home, I'll post the name later), but it has a huge amount of statistics and results from many different categories and competitions.
Also, Slaughtneil can go (or already have gone) one step further than St.Finbarrs, as if I remember the book correctly, the camogie final in 81 was between Killeagh of Cork and Wexfords own Buffers Alley.

That would be great. I'd love to get into something like that over Christmas.

Apologies Gotmilk!
The book is called
"The Complete Handbook of Gaelic Games,
(Full Record From 1887 to 2009 Inclusive)"

It's published by DBA Publications,
ISBN- 0-9551115-4-4

Although it's only til 2009 it says there were previous editions in 1988, 1993, 1999 and 2005, so you might be able to find a more up-to-date edition. Hope you find and enjoy it!

St Vincent's v Slaughtneil looks like it's gonna be a hard fought war of attrition. I could see Sneil pulling off a shock here, they're a better team than they were two years ago. Think Corofin will beat Crokes, and ultimately win it outright. Will be interesting though!! What does anyone else think?

There's no doubt Vincent's are strong & seem to have lads on the bench as good as their starters but they are not invincible.

I completely agree. I believe a lot of bookies have Vincent's as favourites but as I said I think Corofin should be favourites. Looking seriously tough to beat, and having beaten 2 of the other 3 teams en-route to winning the AI two years ago certainly won't fear anyone!! I do believe Sneil are a tougher proposition this year than they were two years ago, and Vincent's have added Enda Varley to the ranks since then so Corofin might find either of them a tougher challenge this time around - assuming of course they can account for Crokes first (no handy touch themselves). To be honest I think Corofin to beat Crokes by 3/4 points, and whisper it quietly, Slaughtneil to scrape past Vincent's to setup a repeat final from 2 years ago, with Corofin being crowned champs on St Patrick's day (albeit after being run much closer by Slaughtneil this time around)!!!

Great feature in the Examiner today about recently successful clubs. A particular emphasis on successful dual clubs actually.
