Not really
the national rugby team is the only one gets big audiences sure the national soccer team gets even bigger audiences.
any national event Gets big audiences.
the all ireland semi finals and finals get the same.
Outside of the national men's senior team rugby don't pull in big viewing numbers

Out of curiosity, what are the viewing figures for these games you're talking about, or where might I find them?

Where'd you get those viewing figures from bad.monkey? I remember a while back looking for something similar and had trouble finding anything

A quick look at last year's viewing figures shows rugby didn't make the top 10 for any of their events. Their highest viewings came in at number 14 only.

Going a bit off topic here but I see the games for the women's world cup will be held at UCD, Queens University Belfast and Kingspan Belfast. Ireland is a country which supports female sport better than most as shown by the excellent attendances and viewing figures for the big gaelic football and camogie games - surely the women's rugby world cup could be better promoted around the country and should have its final at the biggest rugby stadium available? It's interesting that RTE are very keen to support it but the IRFU almost seem indifferent to it.
Soma (UK) - Posts:1751 - 22/02/2017 18:28:52
The Womens world cup has 6 games played a day in the group stage in same venue and that is why games are played in venue such as UCD. What venues would you have suggested other than those used?
They also used Ravenhill as the IRFU wanted a cross border element.

I didn't say I have to watch it and I didn't know the timing of this game either but a couple weeks back there was about 5 hours on the Saturday from 5pm to 10pm where it was under age and women's rugby six nations and as rte force me to buy a tv licence to allow me watch any kind of tv at all I would have gathered they put something worth while to the viewers like a movie that I could have watched.

The irish under 20s and womens teams virtually never play 6 nations games on Saturdays, The 20s games are always Friday nights and the ladies team will be Friday nights nearly always and if not will be sunday.

now stop avoiding the fact you had been championing that very tournament and avoiding the realisation that the rugby bosses are treating it with disdain
hill16no1man (Dublin) - Posts:11703 - 22/02/2017 19:47:02
How are rugby bosses treating it with disdain.

How is it anti rugby that's just your way of avoiding some home truths
fact is the irfu don't even care about women's six nations or they wouldn't be pulling their players out of the team and sending them to las vegas, because its pointed out don't make it anti rugby it makes it topical for this thread
hill16no1man (Dublin) - Posts:11703 - 22/02/2017 19:50:53
IRFU do care about womens 6 nations and the players that were pulled out of 6 nations are contracted to the IRFU to play 7s and that is their primary focus so of course they will be prioritising 7s ahead of 15s rugby.

So by that logic would you agrer that the GAA national league games should not be shown on tv because counties dont play their strongest teams or some players are off playing in club championship ???
bad.monkey (USA) - Posts:4317 - 23/02/2017 11:47:50
that doesn't suit his argument so of course he wont mention that.

Thanks Hill16man, interesting list alright!
What I'd be more interested in seeing (and might be more relevant to the discussion here) would be viewing figures from lower tier games, eg. an average first round gaa qualifier V an average LOI soccer match V an average pro12 rugby game. This might be a clearer indication of the real base popularity of the sports, as those big games in the top20 (all-irelands,Irish soccer internationals, 6nations rugby) are more like national events that everyone watches (almost like the late late toy show, or the Eurovision!) than just sporting events.

For example, I've never played or been a member of a rugby club, but if a six nations match is on, I'll probably watch it (and several friends and family members would be the same).

Another example, the in-laws of a friend of mine are a big rugby family , and never played nor were members of a GAA club in their lives.
Yet every September, like most of the country, they'll still watch the two all Ireland finals.

Move away from the hype of the marquee events though, the numbers watching those games would be interesting!

Well I know last year's league final between dublin and Kerry broke tg4 all time viewing figures.
That's exactly what I said earlier all these national teams or events always get one off people but what I don't trust with tv ratings is how can they be in anyway accurate in the first place.
like how do they know how many people are sitting in one room watching a tv?
You could be by yourself one night and the next night have maybe five people in the room watching it haha
always thaught it was the number of televisions tuned into the programme but seen somewhere before that that's not it.
they also don't include pubs or clubhouses in their numbers and what about online viewers?

Because if you knew anything about it you would know its not possible to get exact accurate figures on viewing figures. I studied under this guy link and in his modules you can only get a survey based on a percentage of an audience and use that to give percentages for overall audience etc. Its never once been the number of tvs tuned into a programme and how are survey makers to know how many tvs were watching a specific programme and how are they supposed to know how many in a pub/club are watching any programme???

Eh that's kind of what I said if you read my post that it's pointless giving figures as they are not anyways accurate
you would argue that black is white pal

I know how important sport is to girls, my 13 year old daughter plays camogie football athletics and soccer all to a competitive level and made the u14 camogie development squad this year, she lives for sport and is wanting to try her hand at basketball and hockey when she starts secondary school this September.
But in all fairness how and why is women's rugby shown live on rte, looking at Ireland vs France!! What total rubbish and an over hyped sport if you can really call it a sport .
There is no way i would let her play this!!!!

Fine you don't like it but to say how can you call it a sport is sad and pathetic
The ladies games are shown on basis of the demand for the games, they've been very successful in recent years and its a tie in to the mens 6 nations tv deal.

Look lads, the head of RTE sport is Ryle Nugent. He is a Rugby man through and through. So don't expect too many favours to the GAA from that direction.

at 14.01 wexford were playing waterford in a massive nfl game massive in the context of wexfords excellent starts to the season as they drive for promotion, the game started at 1pm surely any true wexford gaa fan would be at the game (After all it was at home) or listening on local radio and would prioritise following their team over putting up a post criticising another sport

this is not the first time that people have prioritised and have put up posts criticising rugby while their team was playing ....shows where some priorities lie

There is no way i would let her play this!!!! why not? - my two smallies play it love it love the physicality , the play hurling football and like you with hockey theyve nagged me into getting them swimming ...the more sports the better
..all great sports too

whilei emphatised with your post (and i referred to it earlier) that your young lad has not seen kilkenny and tipp play in the flesh ( in a similar situation myself ..but been bit luckier in that regard due to geography my boys have got to see tipp and kilkenny play champions in limerick and thurles) and i fell coz of such situation that we need a championship structure with more big games , resorting to posting criticising rugby while your team is playing is poor form
