I think this post sums up a lot of the problems we are dealing with. "Heartbreaking " to see players being shown the line so early? Then why am I hearing every second "neutral" calling for Small to get black? ("and then red" as if that's possible) Is there not still a problem with pulling and dragging and taking opponents out? The black card helps the ref as most of them find it hard to send off a player. You would end up with a worse outcry! The whole country are not disgusted with the black card. I am in favour of it and most of the debates on here are about incidents where the ref DIDN'T black card a player. People just like to complain and undermine the referee. The black card is imo reducing the number of cynical fouls. If the referees were more strict the game would only flow better. SirStrawHat (Dublin) - Posts: 58 - 05/10/2016 09:03:26 1922700 Link 0 |
That sums it up well alright. I was interested to read James McCarthy say he thought the black card rule was a disgrace and it should be replaced with the sin bin because it was unfair that his game was over after 20 minutes the first day. Surely another way of looking at it was he was happy that a teammate could replace him rather than his team being a man down for some of the game. As it happened Andrews had a massive impact when he came on.

Go back and watch the 2013 final again. Particularly the end of the game. Might explain the number of frees Mayo got that day. That's all.

Anyone complaining about the ref is blinkered. Stop being hypercrites and bias to one team. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 05/10/2016 10:55:24 1922739 Link 0 |
Folks, it's over and done with. Of course you can carry out the post mortem but if it's to suggest that Mayo haven't had their share of the breaks its fooling no one. Dubh_linn (Dublin) - Posts: 2312 - 05/10/2016 11:08:26 1922745 Link 0 |
I don't need to watch it again, I'm seeing the same thing year after year. Dublin did foul repeatedly in the final 5-10 minutes of 2013 to secure the win. But that does not explain why Mayo were awarded 20 frees more than Dublin in the match generally. I don't think I ever saw such a one-sided distribution of frees in a game in my life. After Dublin's stonewall penalty on Saturday night we got 3 more frees in total when 3 more at least could and probably should have been awarded. 3! - Mayo got 10 more from that point to the end of the match, some of them even questioned by Martin Carney who is an ex-Mayo player. A ratio of 3 to 1in favour of Mayo. And that is not counting all of the blacks / yellows / reds dished out to Mayo's opponents versus those dished out to Mayo by way of contrast in the past 5 years or so. I've no doubt this happens in finals generally, it always seems to be the case that the trailing team gets awarded more frees, maybe its just human nature. I was re-reading the blog describing the 2012 final against Donegal a few days ago. Donegal got an early goal and point, Mayo missed a short free (!), Donegal got another goal and point, Mayo scored a free, then got one from play following a free kick, then got 4 kickable frees in a row, scoring 3 of them. By half time they were back in the game at only 4 points down having trailed by 7 at one stage. Now you might argue that these were all fully-deserved frees, but I remember at the time thinking some of them were very soft. But the point is that Mayo, in my view, have developed a style of looking for frees. I'm not going to name names but several of the Mayo players go to ground very easily and O'Connor taps them all over usually. Its a grand strategy in theory, but it does not win All Ireland's. Bitch and moan all you want, but Mayo have GOT to find another way to put up scores or this hurt is likely to go on and on. Beacaire Gorm (Dublin) - Posts: 597 - 05/10/2016 15:48:47 1922907 Link 0 |
