Tipp v Kilkenny

Replying To Joe_Bloggs:  "I actually couldnt believe what Murphy did myself, I dont care what people would have called it but I'd have grabbed Bubbles around the waist and stopped him there, give them the free and take the yellow card.

On the John McGrath goal, Prendergasts pass might have been poor but when he gave it, Noel was 2 yards behind young Lennon when the pass was given and he waited for it instead of moving to it.

The Kilkenny full back line are taking all the flack, but I blame their half back line, with all the space they left behind them. No player could have marked Callanan when he had that sort of space to run into."
I was probably overly harsh on Holden in the aftermath, he and the two corners got zero protection from HB line. Plus they were dealing with a near constant supply of ball from the Tipp HB line. I still don't think he's good enough for the very top level (ie Callinan) but this is the reality of where we're at at the moment - it's not as if Cody has a JJ or a Hickey on the line to bring on.

Even allowing for the scant protection the FB line received, Prendergast and Murphy made some terrible errors. Murphy I would give a pass to as he had been outstanding up to the final, that was his seventh All-Ireland Final appearance and the first one's he's lost and played badly in, plus there are reports doing the rounds locally that he had been suffering from vertigo in the week or so before the final (which, if true, might explain some of the errors - fumbling the ball over the sideline from which O'Dwyer pointed, dropping his hurl etc). Prender, I'm afraid, is simply not good enough.

A colleague told me this week that James McGarry told Jackie Tyrell to warm-up (presumably to come on for Prendergast) but Cody vetoed the substitution. His theory was that Cody didn't want to throw his fellow clubman into a match he knew was unwinnable and where the Tipp full forwards were rampant, and possibly have a couple of goals scored off him - that it wouldn't be the right way to have Jackie finish his Kilkenny career. Interesting theory, it would suggest a level of compassion and sentimentality in Cody that he's not known for.

That surprises and even disappoints me a little, personally I didnt feel the game was won until about the 68th minute. Tyrell could have been on shortly after half time. His presence alone might have frightened McGrath a bit or even given him a little more to think about.

Ah, I don't know how true it is. You hear all sort of conspiracy theories in the wake of an All Ireland defeat. The other theory, probably more plausible, is that he thinks Jackie's legs are well and truly gone at this level and he never had any intention of using him.

Let's just hope actions will come from his words.
I want to be greedy and win as many as possible this team is capable of it.
We've been stuck in the 20s since 1971 time to kick it on and set a target of at least 30 titles by 2020!!!

Well if Tipp are to reach 30 titles by 2020, they will have to win 3 out of the next 4 All-Irelands.

While it's possible, I think it will be very hard to achieve. As it stands, there is not much between Tipp, Kilkenny, Waterford and Galway. Next year will be interesting. Can Tipp push on and be a great team by winning 2 AI's on the trot? Surely Waterford can only get better? As for Galway, they always seem to be standing at a crossroads, wondering which road to take. That said, they had a fine year which should stand them in good stead for next year. So to Kilkenny, overall they played well this year, losing only one Championship game, the final. But, they had three closely fought games with Galway and Waterford (2), which they could have easily lost. There's a lot of talk about them being finished and the end of an era. Even if that's so, it will happen slowly, there's still plenty of talent in the squad, and further afield in the county. Plus, Cody (if he stays on, and I'd be surprised if he didn't) will have plenty of time to reflect and plan for next year. And finally let's not write off other counties, Clare and Limerick, or Cork, Dublin or Wexford. They are not that far off reaching the next level, and who's to say they won't in the next few years.

And last but not least (as I haven't done it yet). Congratulations Tipp, you won a great All Ireland, playing with style.
