Dublin v Donegal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

There's no point going on about it Mobot, some fans will see it a very particular way and the players can do no wrong. Of all the Donegal players to accuse of that kind of crap, Ryan McHugh only ever wants to play football.

He got himself sent off on Saturday but he gets targeted overall. Gavin comes across as a poor winner highlighting poor Connolly's plight when he got himself sent off on Saturday but I suppose mission accomplished because some people actually think he didn't deserve his 2 yellows.

Diarmuid Connolly is probably the best player in the country but most definitely has a short fuse. He really had no need to make that tackle when he received the second yellow card. Thompson was in his own half and going nowhere. Look it wasn't the worst tackle ever but you are going to get a yellow card if you catch a player around the neck or head.

MM probably should have got a red card as well. It was a really bad tackle. These guys just can't tackle properly as they are forwards. Can they not be coached to just shadow players? They will always run the risk of getting sent off.

Replying To Mobot:  "Yeah, that makes so much sense alright.... Donegal had possession and were trying to lauch a counter attack and our best player on the counter (not many if any better in Ireland on the counter) was trying to break forward to support the ball carrier and Connolly checks his run and they end up wrestling on the ground. Even Tomas O'Se on the TSG said that Connolly's block deserved to be a black card and he was baffled to why McHugh received a yellow.

I really can't figure out why so many Dublin fans are so defensive over Connolly's actions on saturday. Yes, sometimes he receives unfair treatment from the opposition and at times gets a raw deal with officials but Saturday night was not one of those games. Donegal defenders tried to mark him like any defender marks a forward and were unsuccessful because he was running the show before getting sent off. It was his own discipline that let him down on Saturday and watching him for the last few years I think his anger control has got worse and I think the true Dublin supporter would be worried about this going forward as I do as a Donegal supporter when it comes some of Michael Murphy's lazy tackles because some of them can be really borderline and like the challenge on Fenton could be red cards and going forward I would like him to work on this."
When was the last time you tried running through a player making a run? Its not like McHugh tried avoid contact. He ran staight for Connolly and dragged Connolly to the ground. As for the Sunday Game? Is this the same O'Se that called Connolly a bit of a scamp and said teams should wind him up in a newspaper column? Safe to say I'll treat anything he says with a pinch of salt.

Dublin fans arent just defending Connolly. I have already called him a wally for picking up second yellow. But the fact is he didnt deserve the first. A couple of boys here saying he lost control on Saturday. I dont think he did. He cant help a lad trying to pull him to the ground. Hes a naturally bigger lad than McHugh and he ragdolled McHugh and pinned him. But he just got up from the ground. He didnt try hit McHugh.

Every team has a player that is double marked or watched. Connolly is one of 3 that dublin have. Was he targeted? No way. He was carded on the merits of his behavior last saturday rather than provocation. This is not to say that he has not been the focus of systematic fouling in the past. Last year, lee keegan was obviously working on a strategy to get him sent off, similar to the Sean Kavanagh incident on saturday. Drag a man to the ground and get him carded. Sighting such players is a thing that the gaa needs to do in a vigorous way. An all-star and man of the match ban on instigators of these tactics would be a good start. You wouldnt even have to name and shame them. Just omit them from the role of honor and that would be a fair reflection on what they have done in a game. All easy with hindsight. I think that we are looking at a potentially great end to the championship and hopefully we can focus on the sport rather than end up talking about cards.

I've since watched the replay of the first yellow picked up by Connolly

It was a wee bit harsh alright, and you could describe it as one of those lazy decisions made by a ref with very little knowledge of the actual reality of the incident

Just make a statement - yellow card each and move on

Let's be honest, that stinks and it needs addressing, it's being used as a cynical tactic

It wasn't the same O'Se actually.

I think Connolly is being slightly hard done by. Let's say both yellows were justified.
It was hardly a problem with his temperament.
He blocked McHugh's run, so what, every player in the country would do that. A bit unfortunate that they went to ground and he was caught.
The tackle, it was just a tackle, nothing outrageous, hardly losing his cool.

sigh,
Cavanagh came out at the start of the second half, and ran straight at Keegan and levelled him with a shoulder. Was right in front of me.

But aside, that's a reasonable proposal. Keegan was clearly man of the match on Saturday, but didn't make official shortlist for player of the week.

For once I agree with you.

Best of luck in the rest of the championship and I'm really looking forward to your semi.

Keegan even stated after the game last year he set out to get a reaction and get connolly sent off

Got away with it in 2015.. and he's at it again in 2016

Just goes to show that because he got away it that he'll continue to do it

I honestly think that Mayo will be way too nasty for Tipp

Which of the following scenarios do you think is most likely:

i) After the match, Gavin entered the press conference, asked for silence and declared that Connolly was targeted and needs more protection from refs etc.

or

ii) After the match, Gavin entered the press conference, was asked by one of the reporters present whether he thought that Connolly was targeted given that it had happened in the past, other pundits had shared this view and one manager came out and said that this was part of their plan. Gavin then said that he thought Connolly was targeted etc.

If you think scenario i) occurred, then I would concur that Gavin appears to be a poor winner.
If you think scenario ii) occurred, then I can't see how you could come to that conclusion.

I guess the headline, "Gavin blasts opponents for targeting Connolly" is much sexier than "Man gives honest opinion to question based on all available evidence". It sure swayed your opinion.

Very good analysis and really highlights alot of Dublin's strenghts as well as how they had obvious instructions from Gavin to stop Ryan McHugh from running.

I can pause clips and draw circles too! Take any still from any game and you can claim what you like. Lots of lazy analysis there in that piece of "journalism"

Lots of lazy analysis there in that piece of "journalism""]I don't know, I think it gives good examples of how Dublin have come on leaps and bounds over the past couples of years and have all basis covered. They are as close to the finished article that you can get IMO and the analysis shows this. Even missing 3 all star defenders they look defensively solid and obvioulsy alot of preparation goes into this. I found Ciaran Kilkenny's motm interview very interesting afterwards as well, he came across very well, he complemented Donegal and specifically mentioned Ryan McHugh and Michael Murphy as being great ballers which made me think that Dublin had pinpointed stopping these 2 from having a major influence on the game which they done a fairly decent job of. I would still say Ryan played well but he wasn't allowed to much rope from Dublin.

Looking forward to the Kerry game it will be harder for Dublin to prepare as Kerry haven't really shown their hand yet but I think it's Kerry that will have to bring something new to the table in order to have a chance of upsetting the odds. Should be an interesting game and will have plenty of talking points afterwards no doubt.
