David Fitzgerald's Behaviour

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I actually like Davy....imagine if every manager was a boring cardboard cut out. The only problem I have is if Davy was a football manager he would be castigated....there seems to be a different view on what's acceptable in hurling and football in many areas.

Your attitude is exactly the problem.

We'll never rid the association of abuse of referee, people coming onto the field, attempted assaults on referees if we don't accept that they are human can make mistakes and should be able to do their job without abuse being shouted at them and they being bullied by managers .A thing which Davy should know about since he was bullied in school himself but yet seems to think it is OK for him to bully officials when he is a manager."
Agree.

As a hurling and football coach for u10s in my club what I would most like is that the lack of cynicism and referee abuse could continue up the age grades. The culture of abuse of referees in the Gaa is sometimes shameful. I'm not sure why it's not tackled by Croke Park I can only imagine it's a battle they don't feel they could win.

For kids growing up you would hope through education sport and other endeavour that the value of discipline and basic good manners would be continually reinforced. It's the only way, if we are interested in kids being as good as they can be.

Davy is hurling hurling is Davy. As a Galwayman I am glad we won and I'm glad Davy is ok health wise. His passion is unrivaled. Clare are lucky to have him.

You can show passion on the sideline as many managers have without abusing the officials.

Also I tend to agree with the view that if your roaring and shouting during the game you are not focused or composed enough and haven't done the necessary work in training.Mickey Hart has said something similar in the past."
They should all watch M Hart on the sideline and take a leaf out of his book

I hope Davy was listening to the Sunday Game. Either tear up the game plan or resign was the message from King Henry and Cummins. The choice is yours Davy but if you do neither a few long term Clare hurling fans including myself will be staying at home.

I never once mentioned anything about Davey abusing officials I stated he was animated and will die for the cause.
I condone any abuse on officials my post refers to his animated antics which is a pure laugh.
Christ man take a chill pill."
Again. You say you admire his passion but roaring abuse at officials is not passion. That's the issue.

Saying that you've seen worse at an under 12 game as a way of defending his antics (which quiet often involve abusing officials) is exactly the problem.2 wrongs don't make a right.

What part of I'm not defending his antics don't you understand????
I'll say it again I admire his passion for his team and county and yes he gets animated as do most managers.
Never did I say once I defended his actions on the sideline I've seen him go over the top as has everyone else.
And yes I've seen worse at U12 not just from managers but from parents also.
Please don't reference again that I think it's right to abuse officials when it's not the point I'm making.

Davy Fitz is a legend and he lives and breathes hurling; so what if he gets a bit worked up now and again and a bit in your face? All these mock indignation and fury threads, what a load of nonsense. So Davy gets a bit of stick while Diarmuid Connolly and the Dubs come up smelling of roses as usual after their antics last week????? A fair and equal GAA?? Cobblers! Dublin's unfair dominance and the GAA and media boot-licking fawning over them is what is really killing Gaelic Games. N.B. I DON'T expect HS to publish this, they don't like negative criticism of Dublin or Kerry.

For once. He's usually extremely rude and dismissive in his post match interviews. Even when they win.

Not saying his behavior is great but I love his passion even if it's OTT.
remember Davey having to put up with abuse as a player himself not that he was a saint he was able to stick up for himself.
Some character in fairness I love it."
Considering he took so much abuse as a player you'd think maybe he'd think twice before giving it out to players from the sideline then wouldn't you? Like the time he roared at Ryan O'Dwyer that if he was any good he'd be playing for Tipp not to mention the clip that was doing the rounds labelled 'you don't need to be a lip reader to know what Davy called McCrabbe'. His antics on the sideline are a disgrace, he should have been reprimanded for it long ago.

The supposed give respect get respect initiative for treating referees with respect is again been made a mockery of by the GAA who refuse to deal with Davy Fitzgerald and put him into the stands for his continual abuse of officials.
People wonder why people at all levels abuse officials but when they see one of the most high profile figures in the game and get away it for the entirety of his managerial career it doesn't exactly set a great example.
He should have been suspended for it a long time ago.

GAA wont change unless those at the top change and coaches/players who abuse referees are punished. I totally agree with your post.

I'm guessing i'm the only person who likes Davey fitz? Great to see a bit of passion on the sideline. Very impressed with his post match interview here.

He is what he is, he's passionate and dedicated and brings a bit of excitement to proceedings so I've no problem with it, perhaps if all these referees, linesmen and umpires and their committees all actually admitted when they made mistakes instead of being defended by blind officialdom then they would get more respect, some of the decision making is ludicrous and whilst I'm certainly not one to condone abusing officials at times I'm not surprised that frustration boils over. Dissapointing defeat for Clare today but it's been there best year since 2013 with winning the league and undoubtedly I would say preperations this week weren't perfect. I expect to see Davy and Donal Og on the line again next year.
Richieq (Meath) - Posts:2530 - 24/07/2016 19:37:38
Referees do admit mistakes but should all players and coaches not then have to admit all mistakes, apologise for every shit pass, every attempt at a goal or point that goes wide,
Decision making can be poor but unless you change the culture around referees then its harder to help referees improve and get people who may be very good referees to volunteer to referee games.

Leave Davey alone. His one of the most animated managers in the game and I've seen worse at an under 12 match.

His behaviour is not great and as others have said that you have seen worse at an under 12 match says a lot about you that you are ok with that and a lot about the GAA that this is ok.
That Davey had to put up with a lot as a player should mean he would be a bit more considerate but.....

Well done Ulsterman

You have some how turned a thread about the behaviour of the Clare Hurling manager into a Dublin thing.

Jesus posters it's the most boring hurling season in living memory only for Davy on the sideline we'd have nothing else to enjoy. Thank god for Davy Fitz he's the only interesting thing about hurling these days.

Never had a problem with Davy's behaviour on the sideline, it's incredible to see such passion and commitment even from a man with recent health problems. He doesn't give a damn what the rest of the country thinks all he cares about is the success of Clare hurling. However, I think it is best that he walks away now for his own benefit and the benefit of the team going forward. The players seem to have stopped playing for him, the buzz around their play hasn't been seen since 2013 and if you can't get that back for an all Ireland quarter final in Thurles something needs to change. 31 backroom staff is an absolute joke, too many opinions. Would love to see these lads let out and hurl.

I agree with you...lets all just put out cardboard cut outs of men who say and do nothing on the sideline!

What is wrong with everyone these days?! Davy is a great personality and gives and takes it. He did amazing to even be at the match yesterday given his health situation and was then very gracious in defeat with his words on Galway. If you don't like his passion and love of the game so much you feel the need to call him a 'disgrace' then I think you need to follow a more reserved sport like equestrian perhaps!
