I never said the 2001 final was a great match, I still have night mares about that game!.

Did that Meath fella say the 2001 final was a fantastic game? FFS, it was as one sided as the semi-final against Kerry that proceeded it!!"
Not that I think the 2001 final was great match (even if Galway's and Joyce's second half performance was great) but while the 2001 final was a one sided match where one team played much better than the other team in fairness it was not as one sided as the semi that proceeded it, there 15 points in that semi and that was over as a contest after a goal went in 5 minutes into the second half.

In my view the '99 Meath team was the best Meath team under Sean Boylan in terms of style of play and one of the best Kerry teams I have seen play football. The link play between Trevor Giles and Ollie Murphy all through that championship a joy to watch. As posted the Tyrone Armagh rivalry in 2005 was epic as Tyrone were a far better team than Tyrone 2003. Essentially we were spoilt in the nineties and early noughties with all the all ireland breakthroughs and the many new teams who won provincial honours. That's why football to me was at its peak quality wise but certainly aided by all the counties who won something of note.

Greengrass I thought myself that you are more of a Nathan Carter/Country and Western head. How wrong was I?

Very, very wrong Ollie. I'd be much more Albert Collins, Koko Taylor, Walter Horton and Paul Butterfield than that C&W stuff.

Greengrass I hate that county n western music myself. Garth Brooks? I can't see what the fuss is all about yet 400,000 bought tickets for his 5 shows in Croke Park.

It's all down to personal taste Ollie. Some people go mad for that sort of stuff. Not my cup of tea.

Dont really like these threads. The op can come off as a bit self righteous, "I can rise above the chattering masses etc."
Im not a huge critic of the modern game, I find it interesting to watch teams try to crack the blanket defence, but I started following the game in 1998 and never did I hear such criticism of the game as I have done these last 10 or so years, and especially since the turn of the decade.
Yes, there have always been bad games, but the sense of disgruntlement with the game as a whole wasnt around when i first started following it anyway, and Ive personally never heard anyone say that they wish everyone played like Donegal.
True, golden eras are often looked at with rose tinted glasses, but the level of debate and pessimism surrounding the direction that gaelic football is heading is way more intense now than when i first started following it.

Would that be because myself and yourself don't agree with your views on Islam?
I'm genuinely curious. My first game was in 1994 and since then I've taken an interest in the game. From as far as I can remember there has always been criticisms of the game and people saying it is on its last legs etc. I genuinely wanted to know when this golden era that people speak of was. A lot of people are saying the Tyrone Armagh era from around late 90s to mid 00s. Thing is though people were saying football was dying then, Spillane and his puke football quote etc. I came across a video last night from 1992 where Spillane is saying what people are saying now but again this was supposed to be another golden era. I genuinely don't think there ever was a supposed golden era and this giving out about the game is an Irish thing.

Yes there always was giving out about Gaelic football in the same way there is always people giving out about sports they follow but it is at a totally different level now. The difference I think now in Gaelic football is many are disgruntled that the sport has mutated into something stripped of a lot of the elements that gave it its identity and something most people find quiet motonous and boring. People can also see that very soon the typical game will be teams playing all out defence systems against each other (as have been many matches this year including Westmeath Kildare, Galway Roscommon and Tyrone Donegal) with maybe with Dublin having a bigger pick attacking slightly more. Donegals 2011 tactics have been a watershed in how teams view playing the game.
