Minor Hurling Championship Structure

Replying To ormondbannerman:  "Ormond why is it so important that the Provincial Championships are kept at Minor and U-21 level, by all means keep them at senior level, but I do not see the point of keeping them at underage level, should these levels not be used for trialling any future changes at senior level. Do Kilkenny really give a damn that they won Leinster again this year, likewise Dublin or Kerry in football, all that matters to any of them is winning the All Ireland. Putting Galway into Leinster at Minor and U-21 level is very good for Galway, but what about all of the weaker counties discussed earlier in the thread, what are you suggesting we do for them?

finals are key for promotion of the games. the sport and for the media and especially the fans and players
removing competitions doesn't help promotion. Kilkenny may not care as much any more due to success but what about all the counties who don't win provincial titles that much never mind all Irelands. They can dream of an odd provincial title and that is a huge boost to them"

You are right on. You saw the celebrations after LK won Munster Hurling in 13 and the devastation of John Galvin, even though he got the MOM Award, after the 2010 Football Final, when he probably knew his last chance of a provincial medal was gone.

agree with ormondbannerman and oldtourman - provincial titles are hugely valued honours - look at the way our 21 and waterford 21 hurlers celebrated winning munster under 21 this year, would they have celebrated an all ireland quarter final win the same ? would either game have got the same crowd. Was at this years munster hurling finals , tipp fans invaded the pitch and were taking pics with cup after game, the minors did lap of honour after game - provincial championships have to stay -and stay part of the all ireland process.

i was at munster hurling final replays in 2013 and 2014 in thurles -there was around 6k at them

Replying To Oldtourman:  "Oh come on. They beat Limerick, KK and Tipp to win the All Ireland only twelve months ago. I do admit, and actually initiated this post of it, that playing only Antrim to reach an All Ireland Semi Final was wrong."
Yes they did beat those teams in that order and had the bonus also of getting a draw with KK, but each game was a small step up in standard from the last. The team improved with each game, as they had to do. This year, playing Antrim and following up with a classy Tipperary was like going from Junior B up to All Ireland standard in one go. The thing is that the team that got hammered this year is substantially the same as the one that were champions last year so our standard is roughly the same in both years. Not playing the violin at all, but the system does not help us to develop players which is what underage hurling is all about. Would prefer us to start off on the same level as everyone else, get knocked out in a first or second round game playing a team at the same "rough diamond" stage as ourselves, than to be coming in at All Ireland semi final stage and not knowing what the quality of our team really is. In the long run it would be much better for Galway hurling if we won fewer minor All Ireland's but had the same path to the final as everyone else.

Provinces have to be kept. Better for promotion of game to keep them but their role in deciding all Ireland winners must be altered

But their role in deciding how the all Ireland winner is decided must be changed some what. They would have celebrated an all Ireland quarter if it was stronger competition and hurling was stronger....
