Gaelic players diving

Replying To AHP:  "I wouldn't be in favour of a retrospective ban for the Donegal keeper, even though I thought it was terrible carry on when it happened, but the time has definitely come for the GAA to take action on diving/simulation/feigning or whatever you want to call it.
The problem now is whenever an incident like this is highlighted the defence is always 'it's no worse than what X did last week or last year'. The time has come for the GAA to draw a line in the sand and warn all teams that this behaviour will be targeted by match officials. Someone posted that there is no rule to cover this, but surely If the referee, or the ref and his officials are sure that a player has dived , then it can be dealt with as 'unsporting behaviour' at the very least. If players know this is going to be closely watched I've no doubt it will make then think at least before trying to get someone sent off or booked. I know the black card has very few fans but it has definitely reduced the number of third man tackles taking place in the game."
Good post, agree fully

If the GAA want to get rid of diving then why not introduce the black card for this offence? However it is a bit of a nightmare for the referees at the moment and the players are not making it any easier. There is diving of sorts in every game you watch these days. If you take any tussle between a back and a forward where the forward ends up on the ground, it's very difficult for the ref to decide if it was an actual foul, dive or just a fair tackle.

Do the GAA review footage of diving for retrospective bans? I know they responded to the media hype last year on Tiernan McCann but in general I don't remember them ever doing it before or after.

Sean Cavanagh dived in the first minute against Cavan last week but the ref was wise to it. This didn't stop players diving later in the game tho and he was fooled a couple of times. McManus was at it on Saturday too. It's very difficult to referee and as long as frees are given, players will dive.

If referees were less fussy and gave a bit more lee-way to the tackling player it may help. Too often, a decision is made that when a player goes to ground he has either been fouled or has over-carried . . quite often, neither is the case and play should be allowed to develop for a few seconds more."
To be fair to Sean Cavanagh and every other player in the cavan Tyrone match the ground was atrocious, players were slipping and sliding all over the place. Spectators in the covered stand even got soaked as the roof is leaking so my thoughts on that game are.. You cannot assume anything from it. It was played in a good spirit and the referree was very fair and allowed for the wet ground. There was no diving from either team.

Cavanman has obviously never played football and especially in weather conditions on that day. Believe me when I say when you change direction fast you will go down and I don't recall Sean C running around claiming a free - so please catch yourself on with your anti-Tyrone and Sean C bigotry its getting boooooring.

Anti-Sean Cavanagh??

Read over any post I've ever written on the man and I don't think you'll find me criticise him - he's the best footballer of his generation and I've stated many times, I consider him to be the best Tyrone have ever produced (even ahead of Canavan).

The incident was in the first few mins and he didn't try to change direction. He's well known to be capable of "buying a free".

When are GAA going to clamp down on diving? The win at all costs is destroying our games

So far already this year there has been 2 clear dives..Donegal goalkeeper and aidan o'shea. There doesn't seem to be much uproar about it in the media so you can only assume this sort of behaviour will continue.

Instead of bringing in stupid rules such as the mark or he black card which is never properly followed it's about time the GAA addressed diving by making it an automatic ban for any player caught diving.

Why does a Connaught team get up to it and all in a qualifier.
Have you heard of Micheak Shields James o Donoghue or A O Mahoney. None have played in the Ulster championship but they have all dived or went to ground to cheat. So you want to take a look at the whole of Ireland and not just the nine.
Funny thing though a Mayo guy here during the week got on to me about Donegal diving. I think he read an article P Spilliane wrote about it.
Have to have a quite word with him today.
