You take what you want to take out of the conversation - I was the one having it. I don't watch Norn Iron like you obviously do to know who does and doesn't sing but I did a quick Google on McGinn singing anthem and funny enough first hit was a Norn Iron fans blog with a blog from November where they were asking the question of a new Anthem and one player specifically mentioned who doesn't is Niall McGinn - they said him and others just bow their heads during.

It wouldn't "cost" the Republic anything in the long run. But the mentality on both sides of the border would need to change hugely for it to work. Obviously they'd have to divide parliament 50/50 between Belfast and Dublin for starters. But when I see Northern Ireland soccer players from a Catholic and presumably nationalist background singing "God Save the Queen" as much as their teammates from a unionist background, it makes me think it's a far fetched notion even in the long term.

I can't seem to find any reference to Wales in this comment, seems to be a general comment that catholic players from the 6 counties sing gstq as their anthem.

Have you any reason why they wouldn't sing the national anthem of the team they represent, seems a bit odd if they didn't after all they stand and face the loyalist flag and recognise partition."
Well let me help you there Tom:

Me: Which Norn Iron Catholic you talking about Pool Sturgeon out of interest as I watched the anthems.

Pool: Oh maybe I am mistaken so Offside. I don't know the NI players but all of them except the goalkeeper seemed to be singing. Just assumed there would be at least 3 or 4 from a nationalist background in the starting line up. Very happy if I am wrong!

Me: No worries Pool - McGovern the only one in the lineup. Well, not sure what religion the English guys playing are but regardless being English born wouldn't think it strange even if they are Catholic as it is their de facto anthem I suppose.

Pool: No need to be so narky Ulsterman. I looked at it again and noticed that 9 of the 11 players sang GSTQ. If as Offside says, none of those 9 come from a nationalist background I'm delighted to hear it.

You (replying to first 'me' above): Niall MCGinn, Pat McCourt both sang it, one of them is part owner of a restaurant on the falls road and it was festooned with GAA and Ireland flags yet the owner pledges allegiance to britain, bizarre!!

You (replying to first 'Pool' above): You are correct PoolSurgeon"
No, still can't see any mention of Wales. Maybe your computer is different to mine."]And in case the timing of the posts escaped you it was just after the NI/Wales game which is what was being discussed and the lineups being referred to. But I guess you know that and are just being obtuse. :-)
