Bryan Sheehan. The greatest free taker of all time?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In modern day where most free kick frees are taken from the hand. We have an excellent and most consistent free taker in country over the last 11 years who kick anywhere from 70 yards. Would you agree Sheehan is the greatest free taker of all time??

Nope, he's good, but so were Jimmy Keavney and Brian Stafford, and many many more.

Yeah Sheehan would definitely be up there, Larry Tompkins would be a serious challenger too.

When did he ever score a free from 70 yards?

7 steps back, four to the left and over it goes!

Just don't let him take penos!

I think he has the best technique of a free kick taker. Brian Stafford had great nerve.Barney Rock pretty good too. What was that player that played for Offaly? Was it O'Connor? He was very good too.

The first man I thought of from previous generations was Larry Tompkins, he kicked some serious frees from great distance under severe pressure in those 4 finals from 87-90.

Think it was the 97 final when Maurice had given an exhibtion of free taking with his right foot. In the second half Kerry got a free on his "wrong" side, from a tight enough angle near the sideline. Maurice saunters over, puts the ball down and casually curls it over with his left foot. Job done.

Some good free-takers around at the minute - Cillian O'Connor, Dean Rock, Michael Murphy, Emlyn Mulligan, Michael Newman.

Always liked Oisin McOnville's free taking style also.

The best I've ever seen is Matt Connor followed by Maurice Fitzgerald.

Did you have to bring that up and this early in the morning. That's my day well and truly ruined. Paddy Doherty from Down was a left footed free taker and a joy to watch. Also a lad from Offaly called Tony McTague was lethal off either foot. Very few take the frees from the ground now which is a pity. Last year I saw a minor from Galway, I think his surname was Lee, kick points off the ground from seventy yards. Scary!

If Trevor Giles is the greatest free-taker of all time, standards are seriously low.
