Question for our Southern Brethren

Replying To dstuction:  "I feel bad for the Wee 3.
Nobody wants to claim us at all.

Ah no in general I think people just watch the football and don't care about whether the team are north or south.
I do however think that sometimes RTE can be biased against some of the Ulster teams which I dislike."
Was thinking the same thing after reading through a few of the posts. The original question asked was - Would you actively support a team from the "free state" over a northern county?

And it's funny seeing a lot of people saying that they supported Donegal in such a such year.. Interesting to see how much of the country view us.

I would have been shouting as loud as anyone for Tyrone in the 00's.

I would hope to think people from Connacht would support an Ulster team quicker than the Munster and Leinster crowd. Ulster and Connaught have a bit of an affiliation in that we've won the least. I would always support a Connacht team over Kerry, Dublin etc Plus I like to go to Sligo, Doolin and Westport on my holidays...

Why were you not shouting for us in 92 ? Lol

As a Cavan man living in Dublin I find myself shouting for anyone bar Monaghan, Meath and Dublin.

If we don't win ulster, I want Donegal to win it, and would probably call them my 2nd team in Ulster - few relations going back a couple of generations.

I'd probably base my like/dislike for a team on past experiences with their fans. Never had a bad run-in with a Monaghan fan - it's just the local rivalry that gets in the way there!

I think there is a situation whereby we don't like success in others so when teams start doing well we shout against them (apart from our own obviously). traditionally, I always supported the ulster champions when they got to the semis or all-ireland final and I think I still do. It is different now though as sometimes you have more than one representitive from a particular province playing in the knockout stages so it's not as simple as it used to be. I was delighted to see :armagh,Tyrone, derry,Down and Donegal winning their All-irelands and believe it or not I would also cheer for Monaghan if they ever got that far. I must admit that I got really cheesed off with the style of play Donegal perfected recently , especially in the early days. It was painful to watch. Likewise my own county played dire football for a few years (thankfully we seem to have come out of that phase). I do like to watch great teams play though and I love the current Dublin team . I would go to see them just for the enjoyment. I also must admit that I didn't particularly like Meath during the Boylan era . so as a "fee-stater" from "ulster" I would cheer for all ulster teams.

Nothing shocking about it, completely natural to cheer against your neighbouring Country.

Good to see that most people have no regimented
bias. Some Northern Gaels are paranoid that 26
county people instinctively hate Northern teams.

I love Ireland and I like the GAA because it gives
you the chance/ reason to travel around the
country etc. Like Derry is in the North but it
Is a place I never would have visited but for
the GAA.

I do not recognise any artificial line on a map
imposed against the wishes of the overwhelming
majority of the Irish people.

From a Donegal perspective, I've always shouted for Ulster teams. It has always meant more to see neighbours Derry and Tyrone do well, Fermanagh too. Seeing Tyrone lift Sam 3 times was magical initially but I have felt that in the years since that, where Donegal have had successes, that the goodwill extended to Tyrone by many Donegal people in the 00's wasnt reciprocated! The lack of respect in 2013 in Omagh during the league game was shocking and it has turned off me shouting for Tyrone when they've been in All-Ireland Semi Finals or latter stages of championship. I think when we became the 'noisy neighbours' who woke up and started winning titles, then it wasn't well received. That said, I realise that many Tyrone people also wished Donegal well but I'm just talking about my experiences of the thing. Sligo's run in 2002 was memorable as they're also a neighbouring county.

I don't like your opinion but I respect your honesty.
It seems a bit mad that you are against Northern
teams played comprised of Nationalists and yet
will lend your support to the Northern Ireland
team which is a bastion of Unionism.

Generally I like to see the six county sides do well - as others have already mentioned on this thread it's an underdog thing and when you have 50% of a community actively hostile to the sport it makes any success all the more laudable. That's my view anyway. I wouldn't be screaming for any of them as a neutral watching the latter stages, doesn't go that far but in most cases I'd want them to win through.

Having said all that, putting my Wexford hat on I want Donegal to turn Fermanagh over as I feel we'd have no chance against Donegal in a qualifier. No disrespect to Fermanagh in saying that, I'm sure Wexford away wouldn't exactly have the Fermanagh players and supporters quaking in their boots either but I do feel it's a winnable game (as Down was last year)

Unfortunately there are some people in Ireland who
have never broken free of the shackles of colonialism.
I always remember Ryan Tubridy cringing when asking
Gerry Adams if he had blood on his hands and then
Adams replied that his grandfather had blood on his
hands. The girl who asked Martin McGuiness why he
had come down to "this country" to then be told
that Derry, Down, Antrim, Tyrone, Fermanagh and
Armagh are as Irish as Cork, Kerry, Galway or
anywhere else. Its on You Tube.

Its good that the GAA on the whole is above these
sort of attitudes.

Ah rite Bumpernut the colonial brigade never
really understood them. The ironic thing is
that there are Northern players in the
Ireland team so if he supports them does
he boo when James McClean etc touches the ball
lol.

Replying To REDANDBLACK30:  "An honest question for those in the 26 free counties
of Ireland. Would you actively support a team from
" the free state" over a northern county just because
of a dislike of "the black North"???

Like I think its an unfair perception. Down seem to
always be well liked by Southerners for some
reason. And southerners I think were happy when
other Ulster counties won in the past.

But my gran was at Ulster match v Donegal in the
1970s and some man shouted "Don't let it go to
the black North ". She was nearly going to hit him
with her umbrella!!! Its not reflective of Donegal
fans in general excellent fans.

Like if you were from Leinster etc would you
automatically support a Connaught/ Munster
team??? I dont think thats the case but be honest
we can take it!!!!"
I have never seen a border in cases of games between a NI country and a Republic county. Even now that you've put the idea in my head, I don't.

I would support any Ulster team who do well, like I have done with Donegal and Tyrone in the last 14-15 years.

Even the underage teams from Cavan, Tyrone, Donegal, Armagh, Monaghan etc, you always want to see them do well as they represent us all down the road.
