Question for our Southern Brethren

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

An honest question for those in the 26 free counties
of Ireland. Would you actively support a team from
" the free state" over a northern county just because
of a dislike of "the black North"???

Like I think its an unfair perception. Down seem to
always be well liked by Southerners for some
reason. And southerners I think were happy when
other Ulster counties won in the past.

But my gran was at Ulster match v Donegal in the
1970s and some man shouted "Don't let it go to
the black North ". She was nearly going to hit him
with her umbrella!!! Its not reflective of Donegal
fans in general excellent fans.

Like if you were from Leinster etc would you
automatically support a Connaught/ Munster
team??? I dont think thats the case but be honest
we can take it!!!!

I was shouting for Tyrone in the noughties when they reached the finals, Donegal in 2012, Down in 2010 and Derry in 1993.

I'd usually be up for the underdog regardless of province.

I have zero affiliation to Leinster as the province is not part of the make up of my personal identity. I think that's true of a lot of Dubliners. Leinster doesn't seem to hold the same affinity as Connacht, Munster and Ulster do. That's only my experience.

Personally, I love seeing the Sam Maguire crossing the border. I'd love to see the Liam McCarthy do it some day too!

Well I supported Tyrone in the 2008 final and ended up celebrating with a load of them afterwards (Mayo drew with Tyrone in the minor that day)
I also shouted for Donegal against Kerry in 2014 (Limerick still fresh in the mind).
I was shouting for Down against Cork in 09 was it?

Depends on the team, how many All Ireland's they have, when they last won it etc. Maybe it is an Irish thing to shout for the underdog.
In America the neutrals shout for the best team no matter who they are.

In 2004, Fermanagh beat Armagh in the Quarter Final. We were up against Tyrone after...An Armagh lad left his seat on front of me and came back with a Mayo Jersey from the Elvery's store...I asked him why and he said the only thing that would cheer him up was Tyrone getting beat too...he got his wish:) There were also plenty of other Armagh supporters shouting for Mayo that day but I did see some shouting for Tyrone.

Used to know a guy from Donegal years ago. Always said he didn't care who won the All Ireland as long as it didn't go to any of the wee 6. Shocking when you think about it.

Unless there is a bid underdog dynamic, unless the game involves Mayo, I don't care who wins.

Always would support a six counties team after Donegal Always admired the way they kept all things Irish going in the Six Counties even in the blackest of times. Was great to see Armagh Tyrone and Derry winning Sam. Plus when I started following or when I started beginning g to realise what Gaelic football was all about Down were top dogs. Saw them all playing as a young fella- paddy Doherty the McCartans Lennon s o Neill etc I would like to also see Antrim Fermanagh Monaghan win Sam
Don't forget we in Donegal were lucky not to have been part of the Six county state back at the time of the treaty as the boundaries commission were leaning towards part of Donegal being included in the Northern state.
But to me there is no BLACK NORTH--- the Ulster championship is played between the NINE TRADITIONAL COUNTIES OF THE OLD IRISH PROVIENCES OF ULSTER
Through the decades the winner represented Ulster in Croke park and most true gaels of Ulster would have supported that team

I would always support my own Countries Counties against the Northern Irish ones. I will be supporting Northern Ireland at the Euro's however.

Usually I would support other Connacht counties, not too bothered about who wins after that.

Living in a border county I would usually shout for the Northern counties. The only case when I did not shout for a northern county was in 2010 when Down played Kildare in the All Ireland semi-final. I have a soft spot for the Lilly Whites and would like to see them do well after my own county.

I have a hierachy of teams that I do not want to win the football AI as a Dublin supporter:
1) Meath
2) Kerry

After this I would support the underdog the team that not has won it for a long time or before.
Which normally means Mayo!
If a team has won it recently (except the Dubs) I would want them to lose.

When the Ulster teams were winning in the 90s I was sick of the the sight of them for all the heartache they caused the Dubs. Down, Derry Donegal. When Tyrone had their period of dominance in the last decade I was fed up of Tyrone as well!

I would not partition Dublin between north and south as long as the the two teams mentioned above do not win sam I am reasonably happy!

Back in the day I always supported the Nordy teams but not a hope in hell now cause of the negative horrible football they all play and I include Cavan Monaghan n Donegal in this your all the same to me. I still like Down always played it the right way and always had great skilful players.

Question for REDANDBLACK30? Why not post across page?
I don't take into any consideration the North/South like this and don't see why you and others should obsess about it.
I would support the other Munster counties in gaelic if not facing Tipp bar Cork/Kerry considering their successes. I don't mind Dubs winning as can remember being in school in 95 and Sam coming to the school....
Don't mind some counties, Mayo etc but ....

I feel bad for the Wee 3.
Nobody wants to claim us at all.

Ah no in general I think people just watch the football and don't care about whether the team are north or south.
I do however think that sometimes RTE can be biased against some of the Ulster teams which I dislike.
