Mental Health Awareness thread

So ormondbannerman can dish out buckets loads of abuse to posters who don't agree with him but then he can't handle people shortening his name!
Strange one really.
I'd say if he could he'd have us all pc and thinking the same way he does.

I suffer from depression. Thank God I am doing well , Pieta House is very good as are a lot of other charities .

If allowed up I will put up some of my experiences to help others and break the stigma .

delboypolcat, I admire your honesty, when it cannot be easy for you to say that you suffer from depression. It's easy relatively speaking to have a physical injury and for family and friends to to ask how you are getting on. But to use a cliche, the elephant in the room is mental health and people are afraid to to speak about it. I hope that you are doing well now. Best wishes.

Even on an anonymous forum, our actions and reactions can occasion other responses that we may not be even aware of.

For the sake of disclosure I can say to the poster who takes offence when his online moniker is shortened, that his reaction occasions a further reaction in me. My instinctive reaction is to run with the thought : "Ignore"; " Do not respond " ; " do not engage with " ; " keep at a distance" etc.
Now that I have some understanding of the reasons why he takes such umbrage it makes it possible for me to move beyond my instinctive reaction towards something more responsive. However I do think that my instinctive reaction is quite a natural reaction in the absence of any knowledge and is how most people would respond.
My understanding of social anxiety is that it is a condition that is often associated with a fear of social rejection. I expect that most of us could take online rejection in the virtual world in our stride but I would put it to you Ormond that there is a danger of getting caught in a viscous circle -- the fear that lies behind the social anxiety and leads to you taking offence where none is intended is the very thing that in the real world may lead to social rejection and a further increase in anxiety.

It belittled the point of the thread and was very crass in my opinion."
Spot on.

Fair enough. Perhaps though his perception of posts is part of the condition and hence how he does post replies that are harsh and a reaction to what most of us would consider trivial enough matters. I don't pretend to be an authority on mental health issues and yes it can cause disruption here aswell as in the individual's everyday life so it's something that needs to be given consideration too.
Posters don't have to react either of course which might be a solution of sorts.

Indulging unreasonable behaviour is not the best option in my opinion.

Normally I would agree completely but these are not (normal) circumstances which needs to be considered.

Replying To SaffronDon:  "Glad to hear your keeping well Dellboy. It was very admirable of you to share your story that way. Your absolutely right in what you say about the GAA community being there for you at a time of need. I had a close friend and a family member who took their own lives which effected me badly at the time and without the support of my club mates who couldn't do enough for me, who knows where I'd be.

I'm also glad to hear your back training and keeping fit. I'm a great believer that healthy food and exercise is better for your mental well being than anything that your doctor can prescribe for you. Of course I still indulge from time to time, about 2 weeks worth over Christmas for start! but I know from experience that I'm at my best when I'm training and eating right.

Good luck and be well lad."
Yeah am back in full training before Xmas started early this time around . Thanks for nice comments
