Replying To gormdubhgorm:  "I can see your point Wayno it can become silly. Then you can feel that you no longer relate to the team when there are too many imports..
There have been plenty of players in the past who had no real affinity to Ireland and just used it to further thier career.
Townsend, Lawrenson to name a few.
But there has been other players not born and bred in Ireland like Cascarino and Aldridge who who really built up an affinity with Ireland and it's people.

Of the current crop of soccer players McGeady had to suffer dogs abuse when switching to play for Ireland.
McClean on the other other had sees any abuse he receives as a badge of honour!

Rugby is already going like the soccer soon the Irish team will be full of New Zealanders and Australians.

I am curious Wayno would you agree on a parentage rule for the so called weaker counties in the GAA?"
Cascarino was a funny one. Turned out his mother was adopted and he actually had no blood affiliation to Ireland whatsoever!

McGeady I would view as completely different to any of the others you mentioned. He spent every summer in Donegal since he was born. He grew up believing he was nothing other than Irish

I think in Wayneo's logic Kildare and Meath have ceased to exist.

I suppose he could always move back home to Liverpool if that happened.

If I had a choice between Ireland winning the euros and the Dubs winning Sam I might have to think about it for a while and might just give the nod to Ireland.
However if the choice was between Ireland and the Dubs winning the McCarthy Cup then its a no brainer.
McCarthy Cup all day long.

i can understand considering the promixity of some of these 'commuter towns' inhabitants having an affinity for the dubs but if you support the dubs and didnt grow up in or play football in then u cant support them and slate the irish soccer team..its just laughable...supporting dublin over meath or kildare or other less successful counties is blatant glory hunting in gaa terms similar to supporting the likes of man utd and liverpool in soccer

I'd say anybody from a weaker county would chose an All Ireland.

Lay off Wayno guys.
I reckon there are huge swathes of Irish soccer supporters who not only dont care about their county, but actually despise the GAA and are happy when their county doesnt win. (I know a few of them myself).

You're right about the anti GAA thing. I don't know how prominent it is but on the odd occasion I've visited the YBIG website (God, there are some real cretins on there) I've heard posters whine on about GAA tops, rugby tops etc at football and how it isn't acceptable.

However that isn't a reason to hate the Irish national team right back.

Here hold the phone there bosco.

Where did I say I hate Ireland ?

I said I cant stand the national team. True enough. I can't.

I said that I tend to avoid their games, which I do, but that i'll watch them cause of the whole euros thing, but i'll watch their games without bias. I wont celebrate when they score, I wont celebrate when they concede.

I just don't care about them in any way shape or form.

Never claimed to hate them atal atal. Hate is a strong word...

We are almost in the middle of the GAA c'ship season and yet posters on here are spending as much time discussing soccer and rugby as they do on GAA games. Very strange.

due to the championship structure there is very little to discuss..its a shambolic championship structure and looks more and more outdated year on year..interest only comes at quarter-semi stage for bigger counties now and the smaller counties have little to hope or strive for

I'd say Dublin would be a very popular winner of the McCarthy Cup. Love to see Dublin win the hurling.

As a season ticket holder at Bohs I'd have to say that the anti GAA element within LoI support is tiny and shrinking by the year.

It's mainly in some older supporters and it goes back to the ban.

Rovers would have a slightly bigger anti-GAA element I'd find because of the dispute with Thomas Davies held up their move to Tallaght.

All in all there's a huge cross over of support between the LoI Dublin clubs and the Dubs.

That's my experience of it in anyways.
