Mayo Hurlers

Replying To keeper7:  "His county of origin is irrelevant if he's playing his club hurling in Mayo. You're obviously one of these football people who see hurling as a threat. Shame on you.

As I said initially not a Mayo team really .There are guys from Dublin, Galway and Tipperary on the Mayo hurling team. Dublin Hurling came in for a lot of flack for fielding their League of Nations selections .
GAA is not like soccer where you can pick and choose the team you play for. Playing for one's county has to do with tradition and pride in one's own place. Your agenda to push hurling in non-hurling county allows you to twist everything and be economical with the truth and speak out both sides of your mouth. Shame on you. Of course you can play your club hurling in a different county but if you are being parachuted on to the county team that's a different mater. I'm sure you still would shout for your native county over Longford any day.

SOMA Try telling the O'Sheas they're not from Mayo.

Exactly....Aidan and Seamus parents both hail from Kerry. Their father is a bank man and lived in Mullingar where the two lads were born. They moved to Mayo when both were very young. Conor was born in Mayo. Aidan and Seamus have never played football for any club or county outside of Mayo. They are Mayo men.

I wouldn't bother liner, despite them having no Mayo blood and not being born in the county I consider them Mayo men. I was just highlighting the double standards in your complaints about the 'county of origin' of some hurlers. 12 in that line-up play with Mayo clubs, 2 more are with a Dublin club but have a Mayo father, and I don't know the situation with the Castlegar man. If you move to Mayo to live, work and play your club hurling then you are perfectly entitled to hurl with the county - I'm certain nobody is making the move because playing with Mayo hurlers is considered glamorous or financially rewarding.

You're wasting your time explaining how the O'Sheas came to be in Mayo, Yew Tree, sure objectivity goes out the window with some posters when Mayo are involved. It doesn't matter to them that they've been playing football in Mayo since primary school.

I'm sure there are some here who would have us believe that James Horan is an outsider too (having been born in New Zealand) despite having lived most of his life in Mayo. Same goes for Donal Vaughan who was born in Cork and moved to Mayo when he was 7.

Read Soma's last post again, Gleebo. Noone's having a go at Mayo except one of your own.

No need to be so offended Gleebo, nobody here is seriously suggesting that the O'Sheas are not Mayo men. Liner seems to have an issue with the Mayo hurling keeper O'Brien playing for the county as his 'origins' are in Tipperary. He moved to Ballyhaunis for a teaching job in 2010 and has soldiered with the local club and Mayo now for 6 years. A lad who contributes to the local community like this should be commended rather than having his achievements tarnished by people who seem to begrudge the hurlers any little bit of success.

What about the snide comments from some your own crowd?

Liner,

"I'm sure you still would shout for your native county over Longford any day."

Longford is my native county.

I'm not having a go at any one poster, I'm referring to a general trend that I've observed on HS and other GAA forums.

In fairness, I made that comment before Liner turned up on this thread. I don't see how 3 fellas (all either living in Mayo or with Mayo heritage) on a panel of 20 or more devalues Mayo's victory, but I agree that his attitude seems at best inconsistent and begrudging.

That's why Soma & I took issue with Liner's comments.

Most of us agree that county players end up playing for the county where they were born and reared, the county they dream of playing for as a child, the county that they would go out and die for. Clearly there are members of the Mayo hurling panel who have not grown up in the county, players who have very tenuous links with the county and players who have represented other counties at under age level. Parachuting such players into the panel to bolster the team is unfair and insulting to our home grown players and is no way to foster the game of hurling in the county. The day Donal claims to be a Mayo man before a Tipp man is the day Soma, Keeper and others see the validity of my point without resorting to the tired old claim of hurling bashing. It is wrong to vilify those who simply point out the truth that this hurling team can hardly be called a mayo team. Clearly there are none so blind..........

I thought the Grinch only came out at Xmas! Were you saying the same when Martin Carney from Donegal was winning Connacht titles with the Mayo footballers?!?! The amazing thing is that a county now with just 4 adult hurling clubs is competing at Christy Ring Cup level.

Sean Lowry from Offaly that would also fall into that category.

Liner if it wasn't for your comments on another thread that Mayos U17 hurling team should be playing the Clare's camogie team I'd take your concerns about hurlers with origins from outside the county wearing the Mayo jersey a little more seriously. Embrace the success, a Mayo senior team collecting silverware in Croke Park doesn't happen too often.
