it clearly says in the report that Monaghan reached the semi-final with this victory over Down in Newry. another report says that Down had beaten Cavan in the preliminary round that year also in Newry s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5518 - 06/06/2016 14:17:28 1862235 Link 0 |
I think you are being a bit Harsh there. I didn't think Monaghan were over-reliant on Conor McManus yesterday, In fact they still would have won well without him. I also think that they are as good if not better than Tyrone and I fully expect these 2 to meet in the ulster final with Monaghan coming out on top. Monaghan are so tight defensively , they very rarely give a goal away. They have players like Karl O' Connell who break at speed They have plenty of options up front now with Conor McCarthy, Ryan McAnespie, Daniel Mckenna etc. Beggan is deadly accurate with long-range frees , McManus misses nothing on the left and now McCarthy can take them from the right. Their full back line is one of, if not thee strongest in the country (Walshe and the 2 Wylies). The hughes can play anywhere from midfield to full forward and even help out in defence. Their bench is strong with seasoned campaigners like Clerkin,Finlay and also the likes of Fintan Kelly and Kerr. Admittedly yesterday Down were weak but I wouldn't write off monaghan's chances of winning in Croke-Park this year. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5518 - 06/06/2016 14:41:06 1862254 Link 2 |

It's hypothetical but valid Wayne. Jim Gavin and Eamon Fitzmaurice are managing the best teams in the country. How would they do if they weren't managing the best teams in the country ? How would they do if they were trying to beat the best teams in the country with teams who weren't good enough? You outline in detail why you believe Monaghan aren't good enough and you make a strong case. You then say Monaghan and Malachy O Rourke need to "sort that out". This isn't The Premiership . Players can't be bought in. Malachy O Rourke's achievements with this Monaghan team are as impressive as the achievements of any manager in the country. Management is about getting the best out of your players . Malachy O Rourke is doing that. I also agree with other posters who believe that Tyrone are not at the same level as the top three.

Yes, Monaghan beat Down in the quarter final at the Marshes in 2007. But, Down were drawn away to Cavan in the preliminary round. The game in Breffni Park finished a draw and Down won the replay in Newry. http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/football/2007/0513/217768-cavandown/ MourneArmy (Down) - Posts: 1787 - 06/06/2016 15:17:15 1862280 Link 0 |
Even if I hated Marty Clarke I'd have him in the Down team if I was the manager. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 06/06/2016 18:29:35 1862385 Link 0 |
