Galway vs Mayo Hard Battle

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think in big moments where we have been caught out under high ball has been leaving players isolated on the likes of Donaghy and Murphy...one of one you are going to come out second best 9/10 times against players like that. Defending in number's is what you need to do.

being 5 up against Kerry that first day in 2014 and letting it slip was madness...forget Limerick. What Brolly said about us Sunday was correct.

Roundball; Horan never said that about freeman , he never kicked a point from a free in '13 and he never looked gased.

He just came up against a very good full back on the day who marked him well and Horan had Mickey Conroy waiting on the sideline to come on a player who destroyed us the year before in the '12 semi final.

Roundball that's the truth.

I think Freeman kicked a point from play that was called back for a free. I thought Mayo did more closing down on Cluxton's kicks out and looked more dangerous while Freeman was on. I'm speaking from memory here as, although I had it set to record, I deleted it as soon as I arrived home from Croke Park. Also deleted on that evening were the recordings of that years Connacht Final and the All Ireland quarter and semi finals. All I have recorded now is this years U-21 final and that's staying put. Clondalkin will you stick on the first twenty minutes when you get home and tell me how did Freeman do and if he was blowing his nose as he came off?

Mayo will win this one, but they'd really need to start clearing up that injury list or it'll be their undoing. Funnily, I see Barry Solan is the strength and conditioning coach with Mayo and also did strength and conditioning with Arsenal this year. Arsenal have had a horrible run of injuries all season. I hope it won't be a repeat with Mayo.

Over the past 5 years Mayo have been able to dominate all sides in Connacht around the middle third of the field and until a county can get some parity there their reign as provincial champions is likely to continue. Still, strange things can happen on a hot championship Sunday.

Evan Regan is a decent player. I'll hold judgement on him at this level until we see how he gets on against tougher opposition in the white heat of championship later in the year. 2 MotM performances against relatively poor opposition unfortunately doesn't tell us much. We need guys to perform in highly pressurized situations in tight games. Hope he is the man to do it. Btw Galway will not be a walkover. The dismissive attitude shown towards them on the Sunday Game last week is typical of the lazy analysis that Galway will surely use for motivation.

The hogan stand censors have shut down any reasoned debate on the relative merits and demerits of ger cafferkey, sad really!

Agreed. Mayo have serious options around the middle. The two O'Sheas, Parsons, Moran and is Gibbons still involved as well?

This match throws in at 7pm on the Saturday evening. Is this not a strange time? Surely it should be on the Sunday afternoon, the traditional time.

Saturday evening is a better time for it.
There is no point keeping traditions just for the sake of it.

Stephen Coen from the U21s also played at midfield for Mayo in the London game and got a point, I believe. Mayo's midfield is probably the strongest in the country.

I can not get over the fact how people think mayo are definite winners . Just because they have key players doesn't mean they are already winners. For example there is leicster city they won the premier league not favourites at the slightest . There is Westmeath U21s they beat killkenny . Pat Spillane said on the sunday game that mayo have already got there selves ito the final

Spillane has a history of being wrong about rather a lot of things. Besides, I can guarantee that our neighbours immediately to the East don't think that Mayo will stroll Connacht (judging by a lot of comments I see and hear these days, they very much fancy their chances).

Galway have a chance, a small one....but a chance. Some decent footballers in the team but probably (definitely?) not at the level yet. They are young so hope springs eternal.

I think the biggest frustration for Galway followers is that we know that if our structures were right (even if we had structures!) we should be in the mix for all ireland every year given our raw material. The fact that we are so far away......(not even outside bets) is a sad reflection of the organisation within the county.

That said we can sometimes get too pessimistic because of the above and underestimate the squad we do have. I expect a 6 point loss (pulling up) but with a young team, with a bit of pace and energy and plenty of ball players you always have a chance. I said in an earlier post that to do that they need to play without fear (of losing), and go for the throat. Run at Mayo and if a goal is on go for it........no hand passing over the bar (my pet hate).. we will only get so many chances so we need to take them.

In a funny way i think Mayo need Galway to step up if they are to get to the holy grail.

Looking at the Galway forum a good few of them seem to think we have fallen back but think Galway have not made in road's.
I don't think we have fallen back but again I may be proved wrong over the summer. It is very hard to keep going back and back and I think the Mayo team deserve great credit. Anything can happen on any given day. Galway won't lie down or fear Mayo like Mayo never fear Galway. I hope it's a right aul battle.
I don't buy into the theory that we have not been tested in Connacht and has cost us later in the year. Look at Dublin. Plus we have beaten Sligo and Roscommon by ONE point in recent Connacht encounter's.

Replying To neverright:  "Everyone expects an easy Mayo victory. Galway's weaknesses are highlighted and their chances dismissed. Mayo should win but I have a feeling that this Mayo team have reached their peak and are now in decline, something that is difficult to arrest never mind reverse. If Galway show a bit of self-belief and attack Mayo from the start, we could be in for a big upset."
Reached their peak? You must be having a laugh. Mayo haven't even peaked yet, they just won an All-Ireland U-21s , they have a lot of new players who look the real deal. A new full forward who was their top scorer in the League,Evan Regan. Now I've watched his last few games and he has three man of the match games in a row! Which is crazy in my opinion. He kicks with both his left and right and has speed to burn. Also some decent U-21s in the form of Coen and Loftus there too.Not to mention young player of the year Diarmuid O'Connor who has been amazing for them at both senior and U21 level. To be quite honest I think they will beat us this year as for once they have the forward to do it, we are missing two All-Stars and after leaking two goals against an average Laois side I can see Mayo having the ability to capitalise on a defence minus Rory O'Carroll..but passed their peak they are not , this team will only improve with the new faces pushing in.
