Derry vs Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

My recollection is DL played a poor enough first half but when they pulled away in the 2nd half (3rd quarter) as was their tactic back then, they could have beaten Derry by as much as they wanted.
Glynners

I'd disagree..there was a 5/8 min spell at the start of the 2nd half when McLoone scored the goal and DL rattled off a few points. It was this spell that separated the teams. The 15 man defence held us out for the remainder of the game...saying Donegal could have beaten Derry by as much as they wanted is pie in the sky talk in fairness ! If Fergal Doc (who was lording midfield in the early exchanges) had not went off injured after 15 mins, Derry could well have won the game* !

* and probably have been dumped out on our ar$es in the next round !

I agree with Seamy Hendrix here, Apart from that very short spell of scoring, Donegal looked probably less likely than Derry to actually score throughout the game. We were picking off long distance shots with more comfort, and seemed to dominate the midfield area especially in the entire first half.

I think there are a few inaccuracies in the above posts regarding Donegal v Derry 2014.

Firstly Donegal were not what you would call Strong and championship Ready..As far as I remember Rory Kavanagh was suspended and big Neil G was carrying an injury. And it was hardly Surprising Derry where Winning ball around midfield as Donegal essentially played the 1st half without a midfield and it wasnt until after the break the big Neil and McElhinney were introduced. In fairness Mallon was clinical with his kickouts.

I think it would certainly be an exaggeration to say Donegal could have beat Derry by as much as they wanted..However I think the final Scoreline did flatter Derry Somewhat. After the ten min Blitz in the 2nd half the Result was never in Doubt and Dl went into the usual protect the lead mode. But Derry played as many men behind the ball also in the first half.Ii was directly behind the Derry Goal in the 2nd half and McLoone should have almost certainly had a 2nd goal and how he Blasted it over the bar' Il never Know. Derry had big Believes that Day but Jim played his cards to a tee.

Anyhow its all irrelevant and nither here nor there as this is Derry v Tyrone and that was 2014 and its now 2016.

The closer we get to Sunday the more worried I'm getting. Gives a wet day which could give an advantage to a physically strong Derry team. Wouldn't rule out a draw.

Both teams now announced. It would take a brave man to bet on this one. Another game won or lost by the ref is my opinion.

If you go by Tyrone's record in Celtic park then you bet on one team and one team only ---- Derry
They have to beat Tyrone tomorrow, IMO a draw would be no good to them as Tyrone would beat them in a replay
Derry must get everything right and do everything right tomorrow but still convinced Derry can won so I'm here to be shot at.
I know Tyrone have a better team , got better results over the last couple of years and still can get FUTHER down the road than Derry this year but CELTIC PARK----- is it a bogey ground for Tyrone

Most people are expecting a low scoring game with defensive football etc.But actually I think the opposite will happen..

Would be good kick-start for the championship if there was an upset in this one but its hard to see it. In the league game earlier this year Tyrone were a far superior team, though the quality of players on each side may not be that different. Derry over the past few seasons have looked like a team who don't know how to win a big game, and Tyrone are back to being a team who intelligently manage games they are favourites in. Mickey Harte deserves great credit for getting them to that position and I expect his preparation of the team will be the difference tomorrow again.

the Derry team looks very unusual but they must use all their subs to win

Some serious point scoring by Tyrone here. Last two were exceptional.

Derry full back line looks very vulnerable. That first goal was awful to concede from a defensive perspective. Great game though.

Derry conceded a criminal amount of goals in the league and they don't seem to have learned from that. I can see Tyrone scoring another goal or two and Tyrone don't concede many goals. Looking like an uphill task for Derry already.

Good match. Derry look very vulnerable at the back at times, but some lovely scores from both sides.

This game was ended by second Tyrone goal. Derry heads have dropped. Pity started quite well. Tyrone to be fair look strong favourites for ulster.

After 15 minutes Tyrone have completely got on top.I really liked what i saw when Tyrone beat Cavan in the Div 2 final and said as much at the time and ive no doubt that Tyrone can win this years All Ireland : Micky has another quality team on his hands.

Derry are playing atrociously bad. Walking the ball into Tyrone players and just handing possession away time and time again.

Tyrone barely outta 1st gear and already 9 points up.

Big improvement needed from Derry if they're to keep the final margin below 15 points

Derry take off their full forward McGuckian. Never kicked any ball into him

I called this one terribly badly!

Tyrone look superb but Derry really threw the towel in there, in their home patch against their neighbours it's embarrassing I think. They surely knew Tyrone would defend in those numbers and with that intensity but they seem clueless. To be fair, Tyrone are excellent. Defence is like glue and they're breaking at lightening pace. Any inadequacies in their full back line are being glossed over with the mass defence and their attackers are doing damage. The goals have killed Derry
