As Delaney played U-21 last year for Tipp, he's highly unlikely to have played 5 yrs for the Rossies

When one-third of your team doesn't play club hurling in Roscommon or from the county or live in the county - their is something wrong........
Rule 6.9!!!!

I agree that the rule needs to be revisited. My own county has had successive outside manager's whose first priority almost was to ensure we had 5 outside players signed up. These managers have never even seen a club hurling match here & could care less about the clubs. Then the outside will start every match are invariably are never substituted. What does that do for developing the game in the county??? 3 outside players is enough. 5 is definitely too many.

Yeah I have voiced my feelings about this rule before. They need to do away with it as all it is doing is helping the 'weaker' counties in the stronger Provinces/areas - does nothing for Ulster teams where arguably the standard of hurling needs improving the most or is weakest and therefore is actually widening the gap that they keep trying to tell us they are trying to narrow. Lip service.

Have to agree with the Down manager on this one.

If a county has 3 or 4 outside players its unfair on the competition
who are trying to develop their own.

It should be capped at 2 outside players at most.

Your making things up now Cuchulainn35.

Are you sure Ian Delaney played for the Tipp U21s last year?
You do know the same man is in his early 30s and is a Garda based in Roscommon who has hurled for the last number of years for Ros. He did play minor for Tipp in 03.

Cuchulainn35. YOU HAVE NOT GOT A CLUE.......

Delaney and O Meara are living in Roscommon for 5 years does that not entitle the to play for roscommon???? both are in their 30s, your way off with your stats .
If the Down manager wants to b*t*h about it would he not do some proper research and actually have the correct info before going crying to the media. 1 member of the current Roscommon panel lives outside Roscommon so take your negative comments about a hurling team on the rise and go elsewhere.

Actually Sounds a bit like sour grapes!HA

My Roscommon friends- I would like to be wrong on this ...... BUT...

1. Ian Delaney plays for JK Brackens in Tipperary
2. Adrian Murphy plays for Annaghdown in Galway
3.Keith Kilkenny plays for Kiltormer in Galway
4.Jason Kilkenny plays for Kiltormer in Galway
5. Ronan O'Meara plays with Lorrha in Tipperary.

Now - do you not think there is something slightly wrong. Maybe I'm wrong!!! But these individuals all play their club hurling in their native counties, they have all represented their native counties at some level......
I'm not attacking Roscommon and I'm delighted to see sucess return to the small game in Roscommon - but this rule is grossly unfair.....

I thinks its great to see teams like meath MAyo roscommon and armagh competing and doing well, also great to see teams like kerry westmeath and laois doing well , i have no problem with teams having some outsiders if thats whats needed to get them more competitive, as we need more teams competitive in inter county hurling, carlow have also raised their game too in recent years and would love to see antrim down derry etc on the rise, was at limerick v westmeath qualifier last year , while there was a lot more limerick fans than westmeath supporters (but then again in 2001 in a football qualifier in limerick they outnumbered us) , and was very impressed with the westmeath team and especially with the knowledge and passion for the game of their supporters, had similar experiences with antrim fans in 94,96 and 2005 and kerry in 2003. In fact all limerick fans want to see kerry do well as ciaran and mark foley are in charge while keepin ey on joe quaid and kildare. Would be great if in years to come we got to travel to mayo roscommon , meath , down in league or championship.

Would like to see the leinster qualifier group which to me is a great idea as it bridges a gap extended to five.

as i put in another thread its sad to see offaly in decline -they are a great hurling county and all limerick fans are covered in emotional scars from playing them (1994,2003 ,2007,2010) and hopefully they can recover and come back

also while others may disagree if we could get in 5 outsiders and at long last win an all ireland - i would have no objections at all!!

Realistically I would love this for Armagh ( football and hurling)

But the problem is , which has been highlighted by Johnston the Down manager - alot of counties cannot avail of this Rule - Rule 6.9.
As of tonight we don't have Garda stations dotted around county Armagh, therefore we don't have Tipp, Kilkenny, Galway hurlers stationed , we don't have an Irsh army barracks, Teagus offices etc, basically we don't have that 'population ' who work in one county but live in another but alsi good hurlers.
I would say that 80% plus of all these hurlers are probably Garda S.
As I have mentioned before , where does it end, first 2, then 3 and now 5 players. In 2018 7 players ..... come on ???

cuchulainn35 i understand where you are coming from - from reading the posts geography is possiblly a bigger issue i.e. easier for a galway guy to play for roscommon or mayo than go all the way up north, plus a galway is more likely to meet a lady from mayo/ros and end up moving there etc - also does not help you guys when the nearest mccarthy cup county Dublin already has a second side "fingal" but maybe there are some dubs who could be persuaded to give it a go with a northern team, maybe use scholarships in uuj queens etc to entice them --- are there any hurlers from the south going to college/ university in the north who could play for a county team

-where does it end - limit it at 5 at leave it at that and if congress wants to extend it dont vote for it

-what would you think of an ulster team competing in mccarthy cup , probably not feasible ie where would they train , would they still play for their own county , but would like to hear the view of a hurling supporter from ulster

You have to be living or working in that county to be eligible

i would be totally against the team 'Ulster'....
I was at the County hurling feile and feile shield last night, under lights in the Athletic grounds and the Cuchulainn's H.C. played fantastic hurling... but the problem lies at U-16 and minor level, we need more competition and games.....

Would also be completely against an 'Ulster' team. It is hard enough trying to get the best club players to play for their county in Ulster never mind a 'provincial team'. Antrim and Derry have this problem. Tyrone also.

Antrim have the talent pool to make the step up to McCarthy level. We've been talking about it for years. Their inter-club rivalries and an insular attitude amougst a minority of club people that hurling for your club is bigger than hurling for the county has held them back.

I also think that Derry have the potential to compete at McCarthy level if they had all their best players available to them.

At underage level Derry have some fantastic young hurlers - some of the best in Ulster - but Club football is so important here that it takes no 1

A lot of tricky ones to call this weekend:

Leinster SHC round 2
Kerry v Westmeath, Austin Stack Park, 3pm
Brendan Murtagh is back for Westmeath but I'll go for the home side by a couple of points
Offaly v Carlow, O'Connor Park, 3pm
Offaly should have their act together for this

Christy Ring Cup quarter-finals
Kildare v London, Newbridge, 2pm
Both teams with mixed form & results so far. London performing better on the road than at home
Down v Roscommon, Ballycran, 2pm
I've a suspicion the Rossies can pull it off

Nicky Rackard Cup quarter-finals
Monaghan v Donegal, Inniskeen, 3pm
Donegal seem to have gone backwards this year. Monaghan in Iniskeen to do just enough
Longford v Armagh, Pearse Park, 1.30pm
My own county did really well to beat Tyrone but Armagh should be too strong

Lory Meagher Cup round 3
Louth v Lancashire, Dunleer, 1pm
Louth too strong here
Sligo v Warwickshire, Scarden, 2pm
Toss of a coin here but Sligo had a poor league

Excellent job Hoganstand. Thank you for sorting out the 'match-tracker' for the Christy Ring, Nicky Rickard & Lori Meagher. It is a big boost for the counties competing and who are putting in the effort to see their scores being recorder 'as they happen' on a national forum.

I'm already wrong about a few of these. Longford missing 2 regulars really put it up to Armagh for 3/4 quarters of the match (only a point in it with 15 mins left) but lacked the strength in-depth to finish the job. Apart from 2 or 3 slick forwards, Armagh looked quite ordinary.

Great result for Down. Really dug deep and registered their best result of the season. Looking forward to the semi final!
