Nicky Brennan comments

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Strange comments from Brennan, indeed. In fairness though, Nolan Park is a long way ahead of Walsh Park in Waterford.

I wonder what would the score be between Cavan & Kilkenny in minor hurling? The fact that they can never meet means that most people have no idea. Would Cavan score? You saw the difference between Meath & Wicklow minor hurlers & they're both 'B' level hurling counties whose hurlers regularly play each other in senior competition but the difference at minor was 40 points.

Keeper that is not a fair comparison u are making kilkenny are the best hurling county while cavan are the worst, while Kilkenny are regularly getting hammering by division 4 football counties. What would the result have been if the were playing the dubs? Wicklow are just a poorgaa county in both codes

In fairness to Cavan I was at there football game against us last summer and the were playing a hurling u21 intercounty game before it and I think the won something at minor level last year.

Medwaey Irish I find Brennans comments amazing I don't have to shake anybodys hand handball would be a second game in Kilkenny if you passed any handball alley killfane , Talbots inch, or the handball alleys around Kilkenny they are allways full you have to book games in most of them they play from juvinille to senior. I myself if I got a chance to go football or handball I would choose handball because I was brought up with it should I be put in a corner with my dunces hat given 100 hundred lines you have to play football, where in Kilkenny is there a football terotery maybe near Newross . I find football serious slow as for soccer very boring slow toward hurling but the way hurling is going very diffence I might have one game left. I find Brennans comments remarkable considering he managed a Kilkenny football team when they were going better than they are now.

Calm down John, calm down. I simply knew your siege mentality meant you'd be along to defend your country again, I can almost see your face reddening as you typed. It's kind of like Ormond when there's any criticism of rugby.

Bloodyban, however, I'm not sure he'd know how to shake your hand. Either a consistent wind-up merchant or a bit special needs.............

Absolute disgrace. Imagine being a parent of a player or a player sent out in that game in such a prestigious Competition.
Simple Solution.
Half their Funding until they promote Football equally. The Board Executive should also be hauled over the Coals at provincial level.

When I think of the effort and time that people in my own Club put into player development from a very young age in both codes, boys and girls, and then you look at comments like this from a former GAA President it is disgraceful, ludicrous to think that someone with an opinion like this was charged with presenting the Sam McGuire Cup. Why should a County Executive be able to choose not to promote and invest in one code and deny the footballers a chance to play for their County with dignity as their hurlers do.

Most definitely at the very least they should not get a Leinster Football Championship game. If that goes ahead it will be the definition of hypocrisy especially so in light of Mr Brennan's comments. They don't deserve to get a cent out of this game due their lack of investment in Football.

Hopefully this will get the Media Spotlight that it deserves.

John, so do I because beating the Dubs would be unexpected so I'd consider that progress. In the unlikely event that we do, I think we both know the script, don't we? I'm not living in a fantasy bubble. I'm a realist (on a good day).

Don't forget that Nicky Brennan didn't exactly do a lot for hurling in the weaker counties when he was president.

Cavan has nothing to do with this. There will be a senior team there in a few years time. Not enough players for it yet.

I couldn't care less if Kilkenny had a football team. Each to their own. Spending a lot of money on football there would be a waste. Same for hurling in counties like Cavan with no tradition in it. People preaching about promoting different codes is all well and good but Cavan will never become Kilkenny no matter how much is spent. It isn't possible to create a structure without having real hurling people in your county.

In my experience as a Cavan person, if your dad couldn't play hurling (i.e. if he wasn't from a hurling county) or you didn't come from one of the 3/4 clubs that had hurling teams (all on southern Cavan border really) then you were never going to play hurling for Cavan.

Don't understand what Kilkenny are doing to those lads though. Reminds me of that time Crossmaglen played the lads wearing jeans and talking on phones. If it is related to getting money from GAA it's a joke.

Armin, would they need to get to Kilkenny's level to justify a bit of spending on the hurling up in Cavan though? Like, your argument seems to suggest "be the best or forget it". All I'm saying and what I think others might also be saying is, if you don't give it a go, how will you ever know?

As for the lads playing Cross in jeans while on their phones, I haven't heard this story...........do tell?

Armin

Traditions can be created. Cavan doesn't have any real history of hurling but then again no where really did up to a century ago. The GAA codified a sport based on an ancient stick and ball tradition that was in reality more like shinty than what we play. In certain cases the current hurling stongholds were cricket strongholds and this is where hurling gained its popularity.

The aim of the organisation is to promote both sports (there are further aims but this one is basic).

Hurling is not all that popular accross the country as whole in terms of participants. Some of the teams that are competing in this year's championship (Liam McCarthy Cup) are competing off a very low base player wise (the likes of Carlow, Westmeath and Kerry). If Cavan have four clubs already then they are not that far away.

Well put, Benny.

Armin, you say Cavan hurling is to do with tradition & is mainly based in the south of the county. Well, Cootehill are the dominant force at senior & underage in Cavan hurling now & they are on the Monaghan border & have little or no tradition of hurling. Doesnt say much for your knowledge of the game in your own county!
