The slow demise of Galway football

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The last time Galway footballers won a game in Croke Park, the Hogan Stand was under reconstruction, Kerry had lost an All-Ireland semi-final by 15 points, Dublin had gone six years without a Leinster title, Armagh and Tyrone were still waiting for their first All-Ireland senior football titles link

With our latest endeavors to reach the top divison fizzling out , and managing to only secure 2 wins from 7 in divison 2, where does Galway football go next?
success at u21 and with corofin winning the all ireland club championship, has had little or no influence in bringing the tribesmen to even being a sniff of what they where in the early 00s. I really do fear for oursakes again this summer, Roscommon and Mayo are thundering ahead of us! With our unwillingness to give up adopt to the modern game and its physicality being a major factor.

In 1993 a Mayo team as Connacht champions were hammered 5-15 to 0-10 by Cork in the All-Ireland semi final. That year Galway lost in The Connacht Championship by 1-12 to 1-11 to Leitrim. Five years later Galway were All-Ireland champions. Calm down.

Ah the annual thread dedicated to the demise of Galway football. Greengrass you are correct. Need to keep a sense of proportion. Yes we have a lot to do but I don't doubt the committment of players and mgt at the moment.

To be fair I don't think Spion was doubting commitment, more the organisational structure and tactics being deployed which appear to be failing.

I won't comment on Galway football but I will state one thing .

A good Club side has zero correlation with a county team .

There is this nonsense myth that a serious club side would beat many county teams : THIS IS BULL .

Most division 4 sides at full strength in the summer would beat any county team : maybe not in December or January .

This means that a good club team has basically little influence on a county team - they are night and day apart and ask any county player that .

Don't know what's going on there but I do know that Roscommon and Mayo , as we have played both of them are mikes apart .
I hope they do come back though as Connacht would be the better for it .

Galway have often gone 10-15,even 20 years at a time without achieving much. Im worried too, but I always feel that were never too far away from an all Ireland (we have however been wretched in recent years).
I agree that our main problem is we seem to lack that bit of steel and grit and confidence that the top teams have, and maybe we need to be more defensive, though Id find it difficult to celebrate an all Ireland title if it was built on the back of a system of diving and cynicsim.

Madness to write Galway off because of League form. The Championship is a totally different animal. Galway have a good squad with good players and will trouble any team in the summer.
Have a bit of faith in your team.

Galway have some of the classiest footballers around.kevin walsh will get galway back to the top soon.I think they will give mayo a massive game in the summer.

I agree with Dave, Galway have some classy footballers Shane Walsh for example, a guy who can be worth the price of admission on his own when playing well. When they get going they can be hard to beat as we saw in 98 & 2001.They have a youthful side now who are possibly more suited to summer football than winter football.I feel that they are just a couple of defenders short of being contenders .I don't think they are All Ireland contenders but they could shock someone.Keep the faith Galway football fans.

I've always had a healthy respect for Galway football, actually found their brand of football, players and fans quite likable unlike their neighbours. Never really begrudged them for 01, they deserved to win that day. Their decline has happened in parallel with us, in fact you could argue football died in both counties the exact same day. I remember i think it was 2012 we played a qualifier and the match was pure dirt. It epitomised the decline of 2 counties that lit up the late 90-early 00s.

How many years have we all been saying this now? The comment about lacking a bit of steel seems more apt. Hopefully they can come good, a strong Galway would be good for football out west.

Silly comment to make about the demise of Galway football. Galway has a bright future in football and hurling. They have good managers and good supporters behind them. The only blight on the scene is the County board and financial issues.
Galway need to get their act together and clear their debts. Given that Galway city is a boom town- it cannot be too hard to do!

I seem to remember Galway have great League campaigns in 2004, 06, 09 and people were talking about them as potential All Ireland winners then.

So as the poster above says, the League often gives a false impression.

We had a pretty dismal League campaign in 2014 and only just about stayed in Division 1, yet we were all Ireland champions 5 months later. So you never know.

what demise sure we are in a semi final against mayo, win that the last 12 of the all ireland guaranteed lots of counties wont get that far.
SURELY WE can be up for one game,by the way roscommon would worry more about galway than we would about them.

the real madness here is...

Galway were within scoring 0-2 to get promotion
then the article would read

' Galway have some classy footballers '

Every county in Ireland has classy footballers so again it's mythical .

Because Galway played good football in 98 & 01 means zero now . They don't produce any more classy footballers than anyone .

My opinion is that Mayo would have won D2 blindfolded so I don't give then a prayer out west .

It's a pity because Mayo / Galway games were always brilliant .

Galway footballers drew 3 league games this year, if they had won 1 or 2 games, they would be in the top division, someone might confirm the draws. Galway have some really good players, I think they might win a provincial title in the next year or two. I always thought they played attractive football, and hope they make the breakthrough.

benched .....they drew 3 times and lost once by 2pts and once by 4 pts

if they scored 1 point more in the 3 draws ( 0-3 ) they were promoted
