In an opening round league game that means little. Mayo have knocked Cork out of the championship twice in the last four seasons, which should also be taken into account.

I think that the above poster makes a good point about duel counties that find their talented footballers going to play hurling. In the current spirit of both games, it is a very sensible decision.
