(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

yeah wexford v tyrone 2008 definitly a forgottensmi final, this thread though is more about games that should have been high on a novelty factor but never really delivered or were forgotten fairly quick. does anyone know where i could find dublin v lietrim 1994?

It's an interesting list to come up with. I wouldn't agree that the likes of Dublin/Leitrim or Down/Kerry are forgotten games, certainly no more than one would expect after 20-25 years.

As for the entire list, well, if they are forgotten as a whole, here are a few possible reasons why:

- Only 3 of the 10 winners went on to win the AI
- Only 2 of the 10 games had a goal or less between the sides (many were hammerings)
- 4 of the games you listed included Cork and, judging purely on attendances, even Cork people have little interest in Cork football teams

I've a vhs copy of the game somewhere in the house dickie. The mother is from Leitrim so obviously the vcr was coded to record the sunday game that day.

I haven't been able to find any footage of Dublin v Tyrone semi-final in 1984. That was the day that both Dublin & Tyrone warmed up in front of the Hill. Think there was also a big riot on the Hill during the game if memory serves me well.

The infamous semi-final of 1946 between Antrim and Kerry - remember it well..... t'was the birth of cynical play and not by an Ulster team either. ;-)

GAA are missing a trick here. A Netflix style online database of past games would turn a tidy profit for them.

I posted a thread on this exact same thing a few weeks ago. I even got in touch with the GAA media rights manager!

I would love to see something like this. Finally we would be able to show all the clowns who think football was perfect 30 years ago that it was anything but.

I am shocked Breffni - I believed this was only a thing of the last 20 years. Will have to sit the weans down tonight and explain revisionism and also that my previous presentation to them, 'Is it physically possible to puke a football', was flawed.

breffni and Offside, i dont think that anyone contends that cynical play only started happening in the last 20 years.
I think theyre just of the opinion that its gotten a whole, helluva lot worse in that time (and it has).

Reports I have read from bygone days and stories I've been told by the older folk would suggest it was always as bad and, God forbid, maybe worse back in the day joncarter. But here, only having a bit of fun on a slow day. Better leave this as the forgotten semis.

Well you're wrong because many people do.

If it has gotten much worse then are you suggesting multiple players are forced off the pitch due to missing teeth and broken noses in off the ball incidents on a regular basis?

Thats not cynical play, breff, thats violence, which has gotten better.
Cynical play is stuff like diving, feigning injury, getting the upper hand on your opponent by screwing him over and tricking the ref rather than beating him fair and square.

Violence is cynical too. The differentiation is self-serving and convenient to the usual suspects.

It was foxy and if i remember correctly Dubs Tyrone were the other game that day. I'm open to correction but have Galway played in a semi since 2001?

gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts:2786 - 29/03/2016 18:57:47 1839019

Got Milk yes you are right. 2001 was the last time Galway played in an All Ireland semi-final.

nah man. For me violence is thuggery and is primitive and is more often than not spur of the moment stuff..
cynicism is sly,cunning and premeditated.

It's not a matter of opinion. Violence is cynical by definition.

Kerry V Dublin in 2007. Dublin in the middle of their underachieving patch only lost to Kerry by a point.
Mayo V Kerry 1996. Significant as its a rare win for Mayo over Kerry in the latter stages of the All Ireland.

Is there an YT footage of Meath v Kerry 2001 available?
