Forgotten Football All Ireland Semi Finals

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just looking through youtube and some all ireland semi finals in last 30 years are very conspicuos by their abscence. considering these games were live on tv for the last 30 years. i was always fascinated by all ireland semi finals espically pre 2001 as they threw up some very novel pairings. But some are well documented but others are really forgotten about and you wonder nearly if they actually took place.

heres a few i think were quite novel or had the makings of being interesting games but for some reason or another have failed to live in the memory of GAA culture/history.
(not ranked in any order)
1)Dublin vs Cork 1989, Dublin dethroned double all ireland champs and 3 time leinster champs Meath in 89 and paired aginst Cork going for a third al ireland apperance in a row, surely had the makings of a classic for the ages game, plus the revisit of 1983 two matches and the two biggest cities clashing.

2)Down vs Kerry 1991, the old ways vs the new ulster wave of domination, a rarely mentioned game but was ulsters first win over a Kerry team in a long time in all ireland semi final.

3)Cork vs Mayo 1993, a 20 point humiliation for connacht champions and 5 goals from a Cork team which really should have won an allireland somewhere along the line.

4)Dublin vs Lietrim 1994, Lietrims most important GAA game but no record on Youtube.

5)Tyrone vs Galway 1995, overshadowed by Dubs vCork and Jayos goal, but Galway nearly took Tyrone on a sweltering hot day, with the bones of the team that would win 2 all irelands. they were rank outsiders in this game, 1-13 to 0-13 with Tyrone getting a controversial goal.

6)Mayo vs Offaly 1997, huge day for offaly if it hadnt been played in a monsoon they might have taken mayo

7) Kildare vs Galway 2000, a rerun of the classic 1998 game , kildare scored two goals but couldnt win.

8)kerry vs Cork 2002, would have thought this would be remebered as the two giants of munster football clashing in last 4 for the first time, i think this game was full of controversial moments and goals, but no one seems to care!

9)Cork vs Meath 2007, the GAA even forgot to book the Artane boys band for this game, in which meath fans out numbered Cork by about 10-1. Cork won by 10 points but you would think the teams had no histroy at all between them, they had met in an ireland final only 8 years previous.

10)Kerry vs Meath, 2009, a rerun of the 2001 all ireland semi and a chance of revenge for Kerry. very wet day and Kerry only scored 2-8 to win an ireland semi final

The 2004 All Ireland semi-final between Mayo and Fermanagh. Fermanagh nearly made history in reaching their first ever All Ireland final. Mayo beat them after a replay. After losing their quarter-final Ulster championship to Tyrone, Fermanagh made the semi-final through the backdoor. They had a walk-over in the first round after Tipp pulled out of the qualifiers. Fermanagh knocked out Meath, Cork, Donegal and Armagh to reach the last four. That was some journey by the Ernesiders.

Derry vs Galway, 2001. Derry were leading by 5 points with less than 20 minutes remaining and Galway stormed back to win by 3 points, and went on to comfortably beat Meath in the final. A cracking game of football it was too. I've no doubt Derry would've won Sam that year had they held their nerve.

im not so sure about that Derry were always sean boylans bogey team although he bet them in 87 semi final. i think meath would have focused their minds a lot more if it was derry they were going to play in the final. meath would not have beedn as exposed by derrys style of play compared to galway. although nothing went right for meath in 2001 final so derry prob would have got over the line

Clare V Dublin in 1992 was a good one. Clare had shocked Kerry in the Munster final and they really put it up to Dublin in a very open, entertaining game. They were unlucky to have a perfectly good goal disallowed at a crucial stage in the second-half.
Roscommon v Meath in 1991 is one that the Rossies threw away. They were 5 points up in the second half and had Meath on the ropes but instead of pressing on, they sat back and tried to defend the lead. Meath then staged one of their trademark comebacks and nicked it by a point.

Tyrone V Armagh 2005, a fantastic game but little or no coverage on You Tube. Kerry v derry in 04

Ah I wouldn't say the Fermanagh game of 2004 against Mayo is forgotten about, what a championship that was for them. The game against Armagh in the last 8 was epic to watch.

GAA are missing a trick here. A Netflix style online database of past games would turn a tidy profit for them.

Yes - Kerry v Galway in the 2008 semi-final. It was entertaining all right and there were some great scores by both teams but that game was way over-rated in my opinion because of a lack of real championship intensity. The tackling, particularly by the Galway backs, was non-existent - Kerry rattled over 8 points in a row in the second-half without a Galway player laying a finger on them.

No need for Netflix, RTE should have archives of old games and could show them on the player.

Fairly sure Kerry v Galway in 2008 was a quarter final.

It was foxy and if i remember correctly Dubs Tyrone were the other game that day. I'm open to correction but have Galway played in a semi since 2001?

Think the entire game is on Youtube. The third game in the trilogy after the replayed Ulster Final. I've always said they were the 3 greatest games ever played in terms of sheer intensity and standard. 1 mistake = a score for the opposition. Once Tyrone got past Armagh, they walked through Kerry in the final.

That's correct, played in a downpour of almost biblical proportions so it was a credit to both teams that they were able to put on any kind of show that day.

Would love to look back on that Galway/Derry match.

Certainly not a forgotten semi final, but I recently went looking for the 2014 semi between Kerry and Mayo (the first match) and couldn't find it anywhere.

I remember wexford winning their quarter that year. Jumped on their bandwagon that year. They got slaughtered by Dublin the day Fermanagh drew with Armagh in the ulster final.
