and you can see him saying on the video "I am ok"

He's going to say that. In the same way Sexton always does. Doesn't matter whether he says he's ok or not, he's not a medical professional and the decision should be completely taken out of his hands. Also a 'quick on field' test is not enough. There are concussion protocols and he should have been removed and checked properly - can a temporary substitution be used in this instance if they want to check him out before making the decision?. Also agree it was bad form to have him sitting on the bench with his head in his hands in the freezing cold.

Can anyone confirm the concussion protocols in GAA? Mayo medical team have held their hands up and admitted they were wrong which is good to see but it should not have happened and hopefully won't happen again.

Mayo were wrong and I think they realised a bit too late in this case.
Every player is going to say they are OK but a medical professional should be able to see otherwise, I know from personal experience it can be harder than you think in the on pitch assessment.

I don't think we should go down the road of taking a guy off for every head collision but a bit of common sense is needed.
If there was a temp sub rule for head collisions, like the blood sub, that would be a good place to start.
Take the lad off for 5/10mins do an assessment and then decide if he can go back in. I have played almost a full match concussed after passing the on pitch assessment. It can take a few mins to kick in, to this day I can't remember a thing from that game.

This has been well covered in the media and won't happen again any time soon.
I don't think Rochford or Newstalk covered themselves in glory after the game with references to him being captain and the importance of the game but again I can't see this being repeated.

The biggest gripe I would have is the lad sitting there after being taken off, that was awful from the medical staff. No excuse for that what so ever.

I can't understand why the Mayo medical staff are being talked about as being some of the best around etc etc. all the evidence yesterday would point to the contrary.
It was totally bizzarre to leave him sitting on the bench after helping him off the pitch in a clearly confused and distressed state. Can they explain why they did that. Has anyone asked them. and this idea of asking someone are they Ok as some sort of medical check is utter nonsense. let's hope lessons have been learned and this kind of thing does not happen again.

I think they considered a concussion sub a few years ago but decided against probably because it would be abused by some managers.
Does anyone have a link to the concussion protocols?

thanks CroiGorm, I'd missed that. Interesting reading, I'd seen that before and it's good but it's all left to the medical team to make a call. The culture of ignoring these things will have to change
