Division 2 Football

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

looking at the posts it would suggest to me the following results next weekend.

Tyrone v Cavan. Home win. Tyrone have only three games at home and need to make the most of them. Cavan have a very difficult start facing Tyrone and Derry in successive weeks.

Derry v Fermanagh. Home win. Derry seem to be winning the vote for promotion and while Fermanagh under Pete McGrath have made impressive progress the following weeks home match with Meath may tell us more about their seasons prospects.

Meath v Armagh. Away win. Things seem very pessimistic in the Royal County and it seems like a long hard season ahead. Armagh could pick up enough points in these early games to establish division two status.

Laois v Galway. Home win. Very hard to call but if Galway have that many men missing maybe they could be caught out here.

Sorry Sorry Fermanagh

Of course your there & on Merit. Probably the hardest working team in Div 2. Over reliance on Corrigan & Quigley might be your undoing. But defo not for relegation & prob beat the bigger teams..

Monaghan needed to blood new players last year as you know it takes 22 -24 players to get through 1 st half of the season. Its always a bad sign when I can name the full team yet they have nt won or threatened to win All Ireland. Not knocking them fantastic times in the farney County buoyed by great club teams

The way I see it the division is pretty even and I would not pick anyone to top the group - it is league football!. The group appears vey competitive. Meath have lost a couple of good players through injury and retirement but after that any player is as good as the rest as names are just names. Tyrone will find it difficult to top the group- the found it difficult to beat a very average Meath team in their own backyard last summer.

Interesting point about Cavan Laois were the same last year with TOF I think the players had lost faith in him and they knew he was going thus the antrim performance in the championship.

I think the same could be said for Tipp, did they lose a year knowing their manager was going?? They certainly went out quite meekly at the finish up

Tyrone promoted at a canter
Cavan to surprise a few in second after losing Rd1, with Derry pushing them

Laois, Galway, Armagh mid-table

Relegation
Fermanagh and Meath

Monaghan to sink like a stone from Div 1, Down relegated also
Div 3 looks weak enough so an easy promotion for Kildare, maybe Longford to go close too

Did Armagh not lose Clarke and a few others? I would be genuinely worried for them. Had a very poor championship and seemed to be inconsistent in the Mckenna cup. Cross boys will be missing for a bit of the league too.

At the risk of sounding arrogant I think Fermanagh will survive comfy enough in this division.
Can't see them beating Derry or Tyrone if i'm honest. Galway will be a tough game, could go one of two ways for us. But the Cavan, Laois, Meath and Armagh games I would be going to in full confidence.

Although leaving owenbeg next Sunday I might have a completely different outlook on everything.

A month ago I would have predicted Galway finishing in the center of the table. Following on from the spate of injuries and people taking time out I think we'll be lucky not to drop to D 3. That's not meant as a criticism of KW or any of the lads, I'm just now seeing any forward movement in Galway football over the last few years and now with the team full of young lads who wouldn't get a look in otherwise, it's a big ask to expect them to go toe to toe with more experienced teams with better players.

Ourselves and Laois for the chop.

This will be a very competitive league and there are no easy points for anyone. From a Tyrone perspective, we struggled badly against Ulster teams in the league last year, 1 point in 3 games including heavy defeats to Monaghan and Donegal. The other games are all away to the non Ulster teams, Galway always give us plenty of bother away from home, Meath pushed us very close in Omagh last year and we've left Laois with an unexpected defeat in the not too distant past. Any two for promotion between Tyrone, Derry or Galway and Laois and Fermanagh to go down. There may not be a lot separating them all though.

I think we will know more next Sunday, a dreadful day in croke park with myself soaked beyond recognition and the kids too, I witnessed mod loose us a game, until that unmentionable day last June it was the lowest point of my following Meath football, we were outwitted by a tactically astute sideline versus one in disarray, we knew only full well what Armagh would bring and played right into their hands, while at the same time limiting our own performance. It was a shambles.
Now only on Sunday week will we know has mod learned from his costly mistakes, I hope and pray he has. Until then the jury is very much out.

One thing I would worry about Meath is the fact that we could easily see 4 debutants next week all in the backline.Thats ok in the O'Byrne Cup,but not the league.

I'll say one thing people are underestimating Fermanagh this year again they will NOT be relegated they have a great group of hard workin, talented and honest players and add to that a great manager that has really got them playing a style of football that suits them an very hard for other teams to cope with.

I find it interesting that division 2 always seems to hold more interest for the pundits than the other divisions. Almost like if your in Division 1 interest fades. Nobody seems interested in Div 3

All three pundits on radio 1 tipped laois for relegation today. Suits us fine. We re favourites to go down every year and we have held our own in top two divisions since Mick o Dwyer came. Up the Moore.

If we secured 6th place with the last kick deep in stoppage time in our last game I'd be a very happy man. Tyrone to go up, Derry or Galway to join them. Armagh, Laois, Fermanagh and Meath fighting to avoid the drop.

I'm not sure how anyone outside of Derry & Tyrone can be so confident of not going down. I think Galway are the least likely of the other 6 to go down at the moment but there is still a possibility given how the injuries and the 2 lads who've left the panel. Its such a difficult league to predict, Laois ever year appear to be everyone tip for relegation but they always manage to avoid the drop. Only time will tell.

Agree with Laois lad..

Any team can beat any team in this division,I do expect Tyrone to go up.But most of the other teams could go up or go down.

Seems to be a general air of agreement that Tyrone/Derry/Galway to battle for promotion. Would have to agree with that assessment. Of the remaining 5, all are quite capable of beating any of the others. From a Meath perspective, we need a min of 4 from 6 in the first 3 games. I'm quite worried about the opener against Armagh as they certainly won't be as open as Longford, and this Meath team doesn't have much physical presence. Up to now, we haven't handled defensive teams very well and we're going to get lots of practice in the near future. If I was to pick anyone to challenge with the perceived top 3, I'd go for Fermanagh or Armagh. Reasoning here is that both have better management who will make better use of what's available. That doesn't leave a whole lot of room for mistakes at the bottom end with ourselves, Cavan and Laois.
