Women referees? I'm in favour of them.

After attending yesterdays McKenna cup, New season same old inconsistencies clearest black card offence you will see this year didn't even merit any card. Peter Harte attempted to join the tyrone attack but was hauled down by Derry defender everyone in the ground saw it except the 4 umpires, 2 linesmen and the referee. Cathal McCarron already on a yellow card trpped Mark Lynch for Derrys second penalty again no card. Full frontal shoulder not even a free I could go on the sooner we get more Female referees the better as they couldnt be any worse thatn what we have at the minute.

Exactly Rahillyman. This place in summer has loads of threads complaining about poor decisions made by male referees. At least give female refs a chance to see how they can do. I think they'll be more decisive than many male refs. I don't mean decisive like following the letter of the law at all times but using common sense when required.

It's not an issue. People want good refs no matter who they are.

All this talk of it being a monumental day because a woman reffed a man's game. Rubbish. It's 2016. Women can do whatever they like and being a ref is open to anyone so long as they're good. Not an issue for anyone.

icehonesty - do you seriously believe that a woman referee would be welcomed in every pitch to referee a mens game? there are a lot of issue with refereeing part of which are the players and spectators don't know or want to know the rules - imagine the abuse that would be throw at the ref, do you think that the lads who abuse male referees will suddenly stop because its a woman - no they wouldn't and it would be horrific some of the stuff they would come out with. I have nothing against women refereeing but lets not cod ourselves here and think everyone will accept it and it will go off without one day the headlines all being about how some woman got totally abused in a horrible way by some idiot on the pitch, the sideline or stands. Perhaps we should clean up that aspect of the game before we do anything else.

Should it be encouraged or are we better keeping the sexes to their respective games?

Men referee Women's games all the time, so its one way keeping them to their own games?

They will have to go through the same testing and training I presume as the men so if they are deemed fit to ref then that's OK.
Of course they will make mistakes and will be interesting to see what the reaction is then from players and managers never mind the crowds.
Don't see any major obstacle to it being a success if the standard is good it can only improve things.

look, the women who are involved in the GAA can all handle themslves , don't worry about that. as long as you get get some idiotic Andy Gray equilalent spouting sexist remarks in the media it will all be fine. most of teaching profession are women and they have to put up with a hell of a lot so I would say don't fret on behalf of the potential women Refs. If they make the grade then they will be capable.

So some lads might throw abuse at female refs , so what they'll be punished these women knowwhat they're signing up for. They can handle themselves can't believe a few people are acting like they're damsels in distress.

Men referee Women's games - it is not an issue. Women have a lot to put up with - mostly us men, hopefully they will be judged on what they do and not what they are.

Can't see what the problem is here: as long as she's good enough, then it doesn't matter.

Fair enough folks, the general concensus seems to be that people are open to the idea and happy to see women refs take charge of the men's matches.
I'd agree it sounds like there should be no problem but I just have that niggleing suspicion that it will throw up some interesting developments. Nothing in the GAA is ever straightforward.
