Explain to me how James Horan lost 2 all Ireland's for Mayo?

Malachy O'Rourke, took us from Div 3 to Div 1 winning Div 3 and 2 along the way and reaching a league semi last year. We won 2 Ulsters with him too, first ones since the 80's. Not bad.

Good call master.Jack O Connor is a man i admire quite a lot.He has a quiet, steely manner about him.He comes across as a tough man that takes no nonsense.
Didnt he win a couple of college All Irelands? He won a few National Leagues with the Kerry seniors and recently he won a very impressive All Ireland minor back-to-back.A C.V bursting with honours.I hope to see him on the sidelines again.I like the cut of his jib.

is it coincidence that down through the years Kilkenny hurlers and Kerry footballers have had great managers. I don't subscribe to that theory at all. Kilkenny and Kerry would still be winning titles regardless of who was manager. Now Mickey WAS a great manager, He took Tyrone to new heights and won all-irelands with them. He has probably stayed around too long but we should go easy on him as he deserves a bit of slack. Jim McGuinness has probably been the greatest of them all as he took a county that was low on discipline, low on confidence , uncompetitive in their own province and turned them in to winners. He also devised a new system that has been copied by all other counties. Of the current crop, I would think Malachy O' Rourke stands out.

Very subjective and obvious Donegal bias here but if Jim had won again in 2014 & walked away he'd prob be considered by all in the game as one of the greatest of all time.

As it is, Donegal just never showed up & he got things wrong after masterminding a sensational victory over Dublin.

Which shows how hard it is to win more than One All Ireland especially for an Ulster team.

Brings me back to Mickey Harte. Changed the game completely, won three All Ireland's in short space of time & has turned Tyrone from a mid tier county to one of the games elite for decades to come. The man is the best out there right now coaching and will be until he retires.

There's a difference in coaching & managing though. I think Joe Kernan had a less talented team at his disposal in 2002 yet won an All-Ireland through excellent management. Harte had better players than Kernan and as you mentioned, his coaching took them to great heights.

There are some good managers out there and if I had to name the best for me it would be M. Harte-took Tyrone to the top having managed them also at minor and u21 to the top. Other good football managers would obviously be Gavin who did a not too dissimilar job to Dublin but had the Bank of America funding him!!. Others would be O'Rourke and Jack O'Connor would be up there having done similar to Harte and Gavin. There are others of course but like all things its opinion. Cody in hurling but in many instances there are a number of other very good guys helping these Managers along.

From today's managers it has to be Gavin, his 'athletes have the measure of Kerry's natural footballers :)
Otherwise I'll say Sean Boylan, hadn't the players that Heffo or O'Dwyer had and still won AIs!

@clondalkindub Donegal - Match ups wrong, did not ask any questions (Lacey destroyed Dillion, yet he kept dillion central fro the game), walking up and down the slide line looking at the grass. Dublin game was a shocker, dublin played last 15 mins with a guy on one leg and another concussed, he failed to identify, moving dillion at half time cost us all. would JH be held as high in kerry and/ or dublin for losing 2 all irelands, Thats our problem, reward failure (current mayo person of the year, Id rather see that award with Enda :P)

Jack O Connor and Mickey Harte.
The former took over Kerry at the end of the 2003 season when kerry football was set to be left behind by Tyrone and Armaghs dominance only to build a team that reached the next 6 finals, winning 4 of them.
Harte is Harte. we all know of his achievements, winning Tyrones 1st, 2nd and 3rd all ireland titles.
Both men have also won all irelands at minor and u 21 level too, and o Connor has an excellent record at college level with colaiste na sceilige, while Hartes longeivity is in itself an achievement.
I know hes no longer on the go, but honorable mention also goes to Mick O Dwyer who has a great record of improving teams he takes over, notably Laois and Kildare.

Kevin McStay,I expect Roscommon to do better under his reign and possibly topple Mayo in year or two.
Mayo's loss is their gain.

Roscommon have no chance of toppling Mayo and even if they do they'll be immediately beaten in the AI series !

Sean Boylan for me ,
He was a hurling man who took the Meath football job because basically nobody wanted it. Had no experience even of club football management.
He then went on to win 4 All Ireland's out of the counties total of 7. With Dublin in his province and no backdoor.
For a hurling man to come into a football setup with household named Meath players there a while already and get players to buy into everything he wanted done is some achievement.
