Your favourite hurler of all time?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

John Mullane all day every day , the swagger the flick of the wrist , made it look easy , from same county Flynn deserves a mention , roughly when I started getting into hurling Fox and English caught the eye ,
But for me before the helmets that ginger shaved head was a sight to behold .

My favorite ACTIVE player is Joe Canning. As for retired players Sylvie Linnane.

Is there any clips of John Power at his best on Youtube? Everyone says he was as hard as nails but I was very young during his time and dont remember him for being tough.

Being from Limerick I have to say Ciaran Carey.
His nephew Cian Lynch has many similarities but a few differences also, tries things you don't see anybody else doing on a hurling field, hope he goes on to fulfil his potential

Has to be Ciaran Carey for me. So athletic and tough, could step off both feet, elusive and a little crazy.
Second would be the Clare wing back John O Connel from Sixmilebridge. Again an athlete of the highest order and so tough.
Third would be JJ Delaney. Just a pro of the highest order. Ability to burn and rarely if ever beaten. The way he bowed out was just class too.

A football man here, but I really admired Sylvie Linnane. The white boots, the long hair, the no messing and endless balls being cleared.

HAHAHA!

This is a joke right? Think you have 2 hurlers merged into one all action hurling beast there!

A lot of great players have given us pleasure down through the years.... Liam Dunne, Jimmy Barry Murphy, Ger Coughlan, Joe Rabbitte, Michael Coleman, Tom Cashman, Pat Fox, Sylvie, Billy Fitzpatrick, Tony Doran but for me I loved Brian Lohan in Semple clearing the ball, Ciaran Carey anywhere, Joe Hennessey for years, JJ imperious Tommy Walsh the firebrand, Johnny Dooley, George O'Connor and for me the greatest I have seen - DJ Carey - incredible in club and county games. I liked the story of Christy Ring in the 'Park' .
Too many great great players to name a few but so many have given so many great memories... it continues today... fantastic!

Delighted to see so many posters opt for DJ and the Wicklow man above hits the nail on the head.
There has never been a player in my lifetime where the level of anticipation and expectation was so high once he had the ball.
Even 60 yards out, once he turned his marker you knew a goal was likely, the crowd knew it and the opposition bloody well knew it.

Kilkenny v Clare circa 1999, Cody turned to Loughnane and smiled "he's something else, isn't he"
Loughnane said "a wizard"

Just 2 more names to add to the mix

John Fenton - great hurler and who could forget that goal against Limerick
Padraig Kelly - The first hurling game i ever went to was the 93' All-Ireland semi-final between Galway and Tipp and he was immense that day. Won the MOTM in that years final too on the losing team.

Con Roche and Jimmy Brohan of Cork.
Both played with great skill.
Con won a few all Irelands in the 1970's and was outstanding with the 'Barrs
Jimmy was on the 1956 Cork team that lost to Wexford, and was outstanding at corner back with Cork, Munster and the Rockies until 1963

Tommy Walsh. Henry Shefflin gets most coverage for his 10 medals but for me Shefflin was not the best player in that era of Kilkenny teams.

Not my favourite hurler of all time but John Power was some legend. He did all the ugly work and took savage punishment!!
Might craic too. He retired after the 2002 all ireland but his last appearance for Kilkenny was the GOAL charity match the week after the final. He came on as a sub during the second half. He stepped about a foot on to the pitch under the old stand and within seconds the ball arrived at his feet. He stuck the ball over the bar and turned around and walked off the pitch. What better way to puck your last sliothar for Kilkenny!
