Dubs TV aka Setanta

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I do see both sides of this on one side we would all love to watch our county playing every game we can't get to on the tele however as pointed out TV stations pay to show the games and this is a win for all counties as the tv money is in the pot, the tv are also going to want to show the matches that will make money for them. on the other hand with the dubs been prime time viewing every week for 6 or 7 weeks they can get bigger sponsors than most counties and demand more money which is the part I find most unfair.
and one last question what would the attendance be for the matches if they where not on tv

TG4 wouldn't be allowed show a Dublin match on account of no one in Dublin being able to speak Irish except those wealthy enough to go to a Gaelschoil. Commentary might as well be in Russian as Irish for your average Dub.

Fair play to you tirawleybaron, Can't beat a well thought out and eloquent post, it always raises the standard of a debate.
As has been said by several posters Setanta are always going to choose games that will maximise their viewing figures and therefore their advertising revenue. It is a business after all.
Add into this the fact that some grounds don't have lights to facilitate evening games,(Fitzgerald stadium, Dr Hyde park), and the fact TG4 have no doubt chosen to show games that feature teams that will understand their commentators, it's understandable that Setanta might choose to feature Dublin so much. However, given the fact that 4 games will be shown each weekend I'm sure all counties supporters will have a chance to see their teams in the league. If all else fails they could even do something outrageous like actually attend a game or two.

I'd hate to be a GAA administrator, no matter what you do you're damned. If you move a game to avoid a clash with a big soccer/rugby game, you're only interested in money and other sports. Schedule the GAA game to clash with a big soccer/rugby game and you're out of touch and destroying the grassroots support.

Same with this. People are always on about the GAA needing to modernise, make the most of the demand out there, maximise TV revenue etc. saying soccer and rugby are leaving us for dirt in this aspect. Then when the GAA do this, they are panned for following the course that allows them to make the most of the demand and maximise TV revenue, i.e. showing the most popular team playing the most prominent matches.

The whole "promote the game in the weaker counties" line is a bit funny too. I can't remember ever seeing a (non-final) division 4 match on TV, and maybe 1 division 3 match. A few posters seem to be suggesting that we promote football in Waterford, Carlow and Leitrim by showing Kerry or Mayo games instead of Dublin ones.

The Irish language, despite a lot of deontaisí, is dying in the Gaeltacht regions. Getting smaller year on year. The future of the language is in the cities, Dublin especially, as they've let it die in the Gaeltachtaí.

Do you actually think that Gaelscoileanna are privately run fee paying schools? Maybe you're mixing the Irish language up with rugby?

It might help explain why the Mayo Gaeltacht is dead though. If people there think that instead of getting a deontais to speak the language they actually have to pay!

The Premier League requires its broadcasters to show all teams a certain amount of times a season. Think they've also clamped down on Setanta just showing Man Utd and L'pool for the Irish 3pm broadcast. Its revenues haven't been effected by this.
A very simple solution the GAA can write into the contract.

RoyalBadger, You are right to say that the premier league requires its broadcasters to show every club a certain amount of times each season, which is designed to make sure that every club gets a fair share of TV revenue. The fact remains that certain top ranked teams are shown much more often than lower ranked teams. Last season for example Man U were on TV 27 times, City 26 and Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool 25 times each. Compare that to Burnley, Hull and Leicester who were shown live only 8 times each. As with all sports, the most popular/ most entertaining/ most dominant teams will always get the lions share of coverage, as this is what the supporters and/or subscribers want to see.
