But cuede, he was the cog that kept the offaly forwards whirring in their heyday, between 94 and 97. He was involved in a lot if their scores, and created scores by doing things that noone before (I suppose!) or since could do. Definitely a unique hurler, which you wouldn't say for most if the others mentioned. After 97, he wasn't as good, it was more flashes of genius than consistency, and could be anonymous for long stretches. Still though, those flashes were worth having him there. If you wouldn't have him in the top 20 most skillful hurlers(as opposed to most effective) you might have missed a lot of hurling in the 90s

Flack, one thing i havn't done is miss a lot of hurling.Since my first final in 1988 as a 12 year old i've been to,approx,17 All Ireland finals and numerous Leinster and Munster hurling finals. All Ire hurlung final day is my favourite day of the year.
Maybe i am concentrating more on his all round game than purely skill alone. As this thread is about most skillfull player, that is my mistake.Concentrating on skill alone he was up there with the best.

Cue I have seen 46 All Ireland senior hurling finals including replays,. John Troy was highly skilled . He could also think very quickly and use his skill as the game demanded.

Very impressive greengrass. You obviously love the game also.I'm not denying J Troy wasn't skillfull. He certainly was.I got sidetracked thinking about his overall game, which was inferior to quite a lot of other skillfull hurlers.Just my opinion.I will post my best 15 hurlers, that i've seen in my life going to games, later on.

I think we're singing from the same hymnsheet cue, troys overall game had its flaws in his 'later' years (he was young still) but he was the perfect centre forward up till then, although a lot wouldn't have got noticed in the pre-live game era, because he created rather than ran up big scores. His battles with some the best centre backs of the time (ger hegarty in AI 95, liam Dunne in lf 96, Brian Corcoran in AI sf 99) were immense and hugely enjoyable. One player he never got to grips with was seanie McMahon, who was a better all-round hurler, although not as skillful as troy

Cued

Fleeting moments of artistry, but all to infrequent.I wouldn't have in my top 20.

But isn't this the point of the debate. We are talking about the most skillful. The most skillful is not necessarily the most effective player on the team. Nearly all the top players in the top counties are equally skilled. What I mean is they can all control the ball at speed. They can all hit the ball left and right. They can all hook, block, solo-run, bat, double on the ball etc. They all have skill set. This sets them apart at club level and they get picked for the countyteam. What sets them apart in terms of being the most skillful at county level are those fleeting moments -when in a a group of their peers on the big occasion, they can do something spectacular, they can show the confidence to pull something off. Being the most skillful isn't necessarily guarantee success as you need work rate, good attitude, teamwork, training, sense of position, tactical awareness etc. This isn't a debate about any of those things though.
