Anthony Cunningham forced to stand down

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Keeping Mr Cunningham on would have been the wrong signal to give for the Galway county board to give. A final was lost, which should have been won. Kilkenny were there for the taking, and Galway messed up. Something had to give. Someone had to be held accountable, usually the Manager- he went.

"Kilkenny were there for the taking". Are you off your head. Kilkenny haven't been there for the taking since the mid-90's. Never has a team had it over Kilkenny in both halves of a match. They are too capable, too strong, too mentally tough and have the best manager at making changes in the world. Kilkenny there for the taking... have a word with yourself will you

Well said Whammo86.Selectors didn't seem to know who was going to be marking Tipps best forward as different players were told they would have the job.
Dosn't seem petty to me.

Icehonesty,

You guys down in Wexford are the ones who would want to have a word with yourselves or you'll never beat the Cats again. They are a great team but as long as their rivals are fawning over them instead of trying to catch up they'll continue to amass titles.

I think Kilkenny have been there for the taking in lots of games and the opposition for whatever reason haven't taken the chance. It's what makes Kilkenny a great team - when it is in the melting pot, they ride whatever luck they can but when they get their chances they rarely miss. Their record is awesome and is a credit to their attitude and spirit, not to mind work rate.

suckyallypaddy What are you talking about the calls that went against Galway what about Coens head high tackle before half time when he was going for goal he should have getting a red card .

Jason Fylnn is the first player to admit that nothing went on in the dressing rooms at half time. He accepts that it was a case of Kilkenny upping the anti in the second half and that the Galway just couldn't live with them. So perhaps we can finally get on with it now and stop looking for excuses. The better team won.

Johnwhite12 Congrats on winning again, totally agree that Coen should have seen red but I would swop that for all the other weak decisions made by that ref. especially between the 30th and 40th minutes. No reason for a KK region ref. taking charge, but as I said I blame Galway for agreeing to it. KK were the best team in the second half. Fallout from this season will weaken Galway in the short term.

suckvalleypaddy, I wonder would a Mayo ref ( a "Galway region ref" be biased towards Galway if say Galway footballers were playing Kerry or Cork or Donegal in an All Ireland final? Somehow I think Galway fans would be more worried about being on the receiving end of bad decisions than the opposition would!

Didn't think the ref had any influence good or bad. To even mention it is a bit strange and then you say you would have taken the red card instead of all the decisions that went against Galway? Laughable stuff, you would have been out the gate a lot earlier if you were a man down. This reminds me of posters from my own county blaming the ref when we lost to Kerry in Limerick, cringeworthy.

The ref should've sent off Coen & seemed to be trying to make it up to Kilkenny with a few soft frees after.

What is it with Galway all Irelands 1990 Joe Cooney ran the show in the first half I think he scored 1-6 they came out like this years final and Cork ran rings around them.

What a final though - in my opinion third on the greatest I've seen behind 2010 (best) and 2009 (narrowly second best. Cork 5-15 Galway 2-21 & I think Mr. White is correct, Galway were something like 1-16 to 1-8 up at half time.

Great final.My 4th favourite,behind the KK V Tipp trilogy of 2009,2010 & 2014.The colour was great.The Hill totally red & white.The Canal covered in maroon & white.
Joe Cooney destroyed Jim Cashman in first half and Galway really should been further ahead at the break.Cashman got on top in second half and the Galway full back line opened up like the Red Sea.A sea of red jerseys filled their boots while M Naughton missed a gilt edged goal chance by hitting G Cunninghams head and going narrowly wide.A game Galway could and, possibly should, have won.

I have to disagree JohnWhite.1990 was nothing like this year because in 1990 Cork won playing open 15 on 15 hurling not by erecting an 'ash curtain' across their half back line.

Yep that 1990 final really was one that got away.If Naughton had scored a goal instead of hitting Ger Cunningham in the face I don't think Cork would have come back.
There were some seriously good forwards on that Cork team though, apart from Tony O Sullivan they were all big strong men too, good men to score goals like John Fitzgibbon, Tomas Mulcahy, Kevin Hennessy and Mark Foley who hit 2-7 from play in the Munster Final that year.
Cork are a long way off that standard now.
